that could easily be the problem. parts that arent properly lubricated will easily wear out, especially metal parts.

what i would do, is add more fluid and see if it fixes your problem, but if it starts to whine or continue to grind i would either rebuild the tranny or repalce it. with the whining that means that your gears r worn, never a good thing, that could have easily been caused by imporper lubrication.

Your clutch may not be disengaging totally. Is it easier to do with the engine off? Typical grinds are second and third gear on the upshift.

I have never heard of that. My tranny has 276K original miles with no grinds whatsoever aside from user error, and I have changed the fluid several times over the years, usually every 25K miles or so. For the past 120K+ miles I've been using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. Awesome stuff.

As for it being hard to shift, it sounds like what happens when a clutch disc spring or other piece of metal around the springs breaks off and gets lodged so that the clutch can't disengage all the way. My OEM clutch looked like that when I changed it at about 135K miles on the car.

Im pretty sure he is thinking about high mileage automatics that havent been serviced before.

hm damn I hope that's not the case. My wife's car has 206K on it and it's automatic, and I have no clue when the last time the tranny was serviced.

I'm having this same problem with this 90 miata I just bought. Test drove the car, everything was perfect. Changed the trans fluid, now it will barely go into 2nd gear. It doesn't grind, it just won't go in. I don't want to force it and make things worse because it was fine before I changed the oil. I have a feeling the person I bought it from was using either GM or Penzoil Synchromesh. I am going to drain the fluid again and fill it up with one bottle of Penzoil Synchromesh and 1 bottle 75w-90 which it calls for and see what happens.

I've heard good things about the synchromesh. When I change my fluid in my ITR trans, I am going to try the same thing.

Why would changing your fluid give you problems in any car?

In an Automatic alot of times if you wait til mileage is extremely high to change it; the new fluid will cause enough friction to finish off the clutches in the clutch pack causing slippage. Mostly my experience with this has come from domestic automatics.

^^^hilarious signature. But staying on topic, im having a similar issue so the stuff written in this thread is helpful info. I think my clutch is either worn or isnt disengaging completely. The problem seems intermittent and if i try to step on it, it seems harder to engage the next gear as opposed to just cruising and economy shifting. I just recently bought the car not even a month ago. Its an ls integra and its even still on temp tags.

yup, high mileage autos that had very few fluid changes should be left alone, however manual is ok. op did you put in the RIGHT type of fluid?
