I just took my snow tires and wheels off and switched to the summer wheels. I thought the whirling noise above 40 MPH from the drivers rear was the snowstires. Well it is still there wioth the summer tires. checks the rear brake pads and they are good?? Are rear wheel bearings common to go at 145k? What torque do I need to use on the retaind nut that holds the hub on? The only replacement I can find localy is $125 hub assembly for the '99EX four cyl. with four wheel disc ABS.

 

Rear wheel bearing can go the life of the car without replacement. It was a problem on some 5th gen Accords due to water getting into the hub bearing assembly (refer to TSB below); but, wasn't a common problem with the 6th gen Accords.

I believe the torque for the rear spindle nut is 134 ft. lb., see link below. (Someone with a Helms for the 6th gen can confirm.)

Found TSB No.: 99-040 for '98 and '99 6th gens looks like the issue covered my year as well, gues sit is to the autoparts store for more blood.

Hey man I had both sides rear wheel bearing go bad at about 130,000k on my 2000 accord ( so the problem wasn't just on 99's) I got the parts from NAPA for $97.00 skf brand Hub units. problem solved

 

I got a Timken from Autozone for $102. The old inner bearing inner bearing race on the drivers side was almost seized onto the spindle. I was able to get it off after awhile but was touch and go!! I re-used the spindle nut and the cap. Should I replace them with new as soon as posible? It looked like the culprit wa sthe inner bearing seal leting water in!

 

I did both my rears around that mileage, maybe a little more. Only one was bad but I did both anyway.

yes the axle nut should be replaced.

 

Ok, well that was not smart. I just replaced the bad rear hub on the drivers side. All was quiet for awhile. Recently had four new Fuzien HRi directional tires put on the car. I though teh extra road noise was the new high performace directional tires but now it is geting a progresivly louder humming that goes away during right hand turns on the highway (un loading pass side suspension). On stright aways or left turns the LOUD hum is there. You guys think it is the pass rear gone bad now. Or it is the new tires I got??

Also what size is the hub nut I need to buy the socket that fits that BIG nut, but I don't want to take the dust cap off if I can't replace it this moment.

Also I belive rear hub I bought last time was pre-packed with greese you don't have to pack them before install do you?

 

I think it was 22 mm does that sound right??

 

Well the spindle is 22mm, the nut is 1 1/4 inch!!!!!
