Default Valve Seals and SMOKING?

So, is smoking on decel always a sign of bad valve seals?

I had mine replaced about 2 years ago on my R motor and all seemed well. Until recently, when I installed a new header and test pipe.

Now I smoke on decel, especially when I'm on hard decel then blip the gas slightly.

Sounds like valve seals. If your exhaust guides are bad, I'd imagine they'd let a lot of heat by to the valve seals and you end up with the same cycle over and over.

I had the same problem. It was my guides.

unless your ring-land is cracked bad it will not show up on a compression test as a fail for that cylinder! but i will tell you that i though it was my valve seals for a year and some change, decided to boost it anyway, and in like 4-5 months i hade my axle back off to re weld a hanger. and it was off for like 2 weeks because my lazy *** didnt feel like crawlin under the car to put it back on( plus it sounded so much better!! ) and it leaned my car out just enough to finish off the piston ring-land in cyl 3. but all of the others were cracked also. my compression was still like 230 on 1,2,4 but 3 was down to 120 so i knew!! this being said i had just done a compression test while the exhaust was still on ( before i pulled it off) and it put 240 across the board and like i said all of my pistons were cracked! honda is known for its weak ring-lands

Anyways, my neighbors GSR is doing a similar thing. Smokes on startup, and a bit when engine breaking. Any thoughts on where to start diagnosis? We did a compression and leak down test and both showed good results. I'd hate to pull the head off and replace the valve stem seals and guides and it turns out the block is at fault.

A CAT can hide oil consumption/smoke problems because it "filters"/burns off the oil/smoke.

very true i just installed a test pipe and i noticed more smoke...but my motor only smokes when the vtec hits and i took it about 6 times down the track and i got like 220 miles to a quart of oil but now i went 280 miles normal driving and not used hardly any oil.

Installing valve seals is tricky. Some seals, like the blue-green viton ones don't like mis-alignment and will smoke right off da bat. I've had this happen to a couple buddies/customers.

There's a trick for proper installment that avoids mis-alignment.
