Default 91 DA coolant rises on the resesvoir?

Last week I noticed the coolant was way over the max. Coolant was almost topped off of the reservoir almost spilling. I removed it up to the max. Today, I check to see that its going up over the max again. Why is it doing that?

Coolant is still the light color green. Prestone. I did a drain and flush two years ago.

Thanks for the help

Coolant rising can be a sign of your engine over heating...

Is your engine over heating? Do you notice on your temperature gauge?

Needle stays half way from the middle mark.

What are the things that need to be looked at if the engine is over heating. Will it be the Radiator, thermostat, or hoses ????

Thanks

The hoses will start to bulge, temp gauge will raise. Try replacing the thermostat for starts.

So needle is between the middle point and the Hot? or the middle point and Cold?

If the coolant is expanding and rising because engine is over heating, then look at these:

1) thermostat is bad
2) radiator is bad
3) fan motor is bad
4) lower hose
5) water pump

let us know what you find out

between middle point and cold. No sign of overheating. So if one of the choices on your lists are bad, should the needle go up to hot?

yes, unless your thermostat is bad...

I would start with changing the thermostat...and since you are doing that, change the hoses too (it's good practice to change them...they are cheap anyway)...

yeah your thermostat is not opening like it should so it's forcing the coolant to return which is the over flow tank but it could also be you water pump but change the thermostat first that's the easiest thing to do without having to tear everything apart

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the thermostat first.

STOP!!! before doing anything major, buy a brand new radiator cap for like $10. It solved my overflowing reservoir problem and hopefully itll solve yours. but if your car is overheating and overfilling then most likely thermostat. gl wit it!

I haven't done it yet. How is a "bad" rad cap overflowing the reservoir? I'm curious. Thanks for replying.

A bad radiator cap won't be able to help pressurize and let off the excess pressure so that your car doesn't overheat!

You can pressure test the cap to see if it's bad...I think it's 1 minute! Read on the cap for the pressure range. Or you can just buy it and replace it (just make sure you get the correct cap: pressure range).

Let us know what's happening...

Ohh I see.

Update: I was curious of what the bottom of the cap looked like. So I removed the cap, and the gasket rubber looks fine and everything around it. Put it back in. Drove the car for that day. The next day I looked at the resesvoir and the coolant went down to the max line. Prior to that, the coolant was all the way to the top of the reservoir!

Did I fix it somehow by removing the cap? I'll keep monitoring this. Let you know.

Looked at it this morning before going to work - right on the max. After driving to work- right on the max.

Removing that cap must have done something to fix it. Cause I heard air either coming out or getting sucked in. Ohh well. Its all good for now. Thanks for helping out though.
