Default What is the point of hatchbacks?

Im not hating on them, I have one myself. But these cars ARE 2 doors and Honda had a coupe, sedan, and a hatchback during 1992-2000.

What purpose do hatches fit that coupes cant?

Reason why im asking is because Honda only has 2 Civics now. In 1997 they had 4 variations of the Civic. Coupe, hatch, sedan, and Del Sol.

I've been able to haul around some pretty big stuff in mine with the rear seats folded down.

this is just my opinion..... small cars are for getting around crowded areas easier, easier to find smaller parking spots and i can fit more in a 92 hatch than a 92 coupe

the purpose of the hatch model was more usefull in japan. they were used as small cargo vans basically. yet it could sit 4 nicely. why do you think the jdm rear seats are completly flat when folded donw and have plastic on it instead of cloth like ours? so it's more durable to carry stuff around

I can't fit my 4x12 half stack, a bass amp, and a drum kit in the trunk of my coupe. That's why there's a hatchback.

man, I wish I had one.

I thnk while the leg room is the same, the headroom is definitely more in a coupe.

Me too, they are lighter and and you can fit in tighter places. Also if you have a sound system, the bass sounds better.

hatches were originially target for economy
smaller car= less gas, less cost of production, cheaper insurance, no luxuries ie power windows, locks,

i think the REAL question is: what purpose does the coupe serve that the hatch can't?

I asked myself that all the time.. well if we talk about length size 96-00 civics, it isn't that much shorter than its coupe version. I measured my ek hatch with his ek coupe and theres not a lot of difference in length.

I would say the purpose is to appeal to younger people.. the look at its time was very unique and believe it or not many people thought the hatch look futuristic (I seen an old episode on motor week on youtube)

Besides I think its way roomier than the coupe.. (backseat wise)
and its easier to view your surroundings with its huge rear window glass.. so not that many blind spots

there only like a 20 to 25 pound difference between a coupe and a hatch so its not really lighter

They appeal to a different area of consumers, more space as listed above, and some would say more aerodynamic.

Hatch has better headroom in the back, and your head is nowhere near the back window.

CX/VX vs. EX I am sure the weight difference is more than that.
