What is the point of hatchbacks?
Im not hating on them, I have one myself. But these cars ARE 2 doors and Honda had a coupe, sedan, and a hatchback during 1992-2000.
What purpose do hatches fit that coupes cant?
Reason why im asking is because Honda only has 2 Civics now. In 1997 they had 4 variations of the Civic. Coupe, hatch, sedan, and Del Sol.

the purpose of the hatch model was more usefull in japan. they were used as small cargo vans basically. yet it could sit 4 nicely. why do you think the jdm rear seats are completly flat when folded donw and have plastic on it instead of cloth like ours? so it's more durable to carry stuff around

x2 i can run any cheap flea market subs and amp and it'll sound good in a hatch...and there is alot of leg room i got some big, tall buddies and they even say it looks small but got hella room in the back seats, and it's amazing how much sh#t you can stuff in there...
hatches were originially target for economy
smaller car= less gas, less cost of production, cheaper insurance, no luxuries ie power windows, locks,
i think the REAL question is: what purpose does the coupe serve that the hatch can't?

I asked myself that all the time.. well if we talk about length size 96-00 civics, it isn't that much shorter than its coupe version. I measured my ek hatch with his ek coupe and theres not a lot of difference in length.
I would say the purpose is to appeal to younger people.. the look at its time was very unique and believe it or not many people thought the hatch look futuristic (I seen an old episode on motor week on youtube)
Besides I think its way roomier than the coupe.. (backseat wise)
and its easier to view your surroundings with its huge rear window glass.. so not that many blind spots

big difference would be like 100lbs lighter or whatever 20 is like nothing. your not gonna see a big difference. i hate when people say hatch are so much lighter then coupes
never been in one but i guess its like having two trunks? maybe they wanted to give extra space, like posted before, maybe they go in this order del sol>coupe>hatch>sedan
CX/VX vs. EX I am sure the weight difference is more than that.
im sure it is to but i dont have the numbers. i know the ex is really heavy. i have a dx coupe
