Default Type R final drive in B16 tranny, worth the time/money????

Just wondering if anyone else has put a type R final drive (4.7), or a different aftermarket final drive in their B16 trans, and what they thought of it. I am planning on putting in a LSD soon, and I was thinking about putting a type R or different final drive in it while I am, but I am wondering how much of a difference it makes and if anyone has done it previously and thinks its worth it or not? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Its like 400 on hmotors. The price isn't bad I don't think, just wondering how much of a difference it will actually make.

I have a type r tranny and I gotta admit the short gear ratio's are nice but freeway driving is a pain in the ***.

I cruise 70 mph and im at 4000 rpm. I dont like to rev that high all the time so I dont go on many trips with my car.

oh and 7500 in fifth gear is only like 130 mph but it'll get there fast :-/

Does the b16 tranny not have a 4.4 ratio already? Is the extra .3 difference really worth the money?

It depends on weather or not it is your dd. And if so how far do you drive on the daily. Its worth it of your not driveing it long distances.

If you want just lsd i have a b16 trans with type r lsd in it im trying to get rid of. Nothing wrong with it just swapped my car with b18c.

How much are you looking for with the trans? I do already have the 4.4 final in mine, like the older type R does. I am doing this post to see if that extra .3 is worth it, like how much of a difference it would make. I am putting an LS 5th gear in it also, so the high revving should not be as much of a concern. Any other thoughts?

well the lsd will make up for it, but if you think about a mountan bike and you change gears, make a difference. i did both and took a second off my time in a qt mile.

It should be clarified that the "only" transmissions that actually came with the 4.7 FD, was the JDM spec Type R transmission from 1998-01

All USDM type R trannies were the 4.4 version, as well as the 1996-97 JDM versions

Is it worth it, HELL YA!!

For people worried about hiway driving, swap in an LS 5th gear and syncro

Not to hijack the thread but can someone explain to me what exactly happens when you swap in the 4.7 final drive? Also what is the advantage of having the LS 5th gear added?

If I use my car for drag racing or circuit would it make sense to have the final drive? The circuit track we have here in Jamaica is a tight track with plenty of corners and up and downs with one real straightaway but I'll pass 4th gear before the end of it. Should I be considering the final drive/LS 5th gear combination for my box?

Signed,
Confused lol

It lowers the overall gear ratio of the transmission. Meaning you can run through the gears quicker. Your theoratical top speed will be lower, but you'll get there faster.

Lowers the RPM in 5th gear for better mileage on the highway.

Yes it would.

No, not if you're gonna need fifth gear in a race.

By the way, all of those complaining about high RPMs in 5th gear - it's not a big deal. It's not the RPM that kills your gas mileage - it's throttle position and constantly getting on and off the gas pedal. I remember a thread a while back where the gas mileage lost was actually negliable.

I actually ran a 4.785 final drive with LS fifth and swapped BACK to the ITR / B16 fifth because I loved the acceleration in 5th I could get.
