i want to put the short b16 gears into my gsr tranny and replace the final drive with a 4.78 or something longer. i was told the final drive is just gear the transmission is running at while shifting in between shifts, so basically while in neutral. is this true. if so would i make my 5th gear the same as the final drive, or could i use a longer 5th gear and keep the final drive the way it is.

Yes, you can put b16 gears in a gsr. You just have to make sure that you change the gears on the main shaft and the counter shaft. Who ever told you that about the final drive is wrong!! The final drive is run at all times when the tranny is in a gear, and if you get a 4.7 final drive, all of your gears will be shorter.

all the money and effort your going to spend doing that, it's not worth it.

you can go buy an itr transmission for the money your going to spend.
or even go buy a cheap b16 tranny at that..
