Default A6 swap, new harnes has a squre plug

i am swapping a new long block a6 into my wagovan, i am not sure what year the new motor is but the engine harness that came on it has a square plug on the driverside shock tower instead of a round one. i don't have my old harness, is there a pinout diagram somehwhere to wire this?

You should be using the harness that came with your car. Save yourself the headache

modifying your stock harness is the way its supposed to be done. sounds like you just tried to plug in the new harness

your D16A6 engine harness with square 6-wire connector at the driver's side is the 1988 model - the only difference between the 88 and 89-91 connectors is the 88 didn't have a Fast Idle Control Valve so it has 2 less wires - you could repin a round 8-wire connector onto the harness and just match up the wire colors on both sides of the connector
