wow i thought they didn't...
like the y8 has one additional tooth on the crank...that's not it but something minor...
like it would work if you all so ran a 96- transmission... or something like that????
can't remember exactly what it is right now but regardless i was always told they didn't

 

All '92 - '00 D-series clutches and transmissions are interchangeable. '88 D-series trannys use a different input shaft than '89 to '91 models neccesitating a different clutch, perhaps this is what you were thinking of.
