Default Direct Injection and the Future of Honda

If anybody isn't familiar with direct injection, this makes this a bore from the start. Here's a quick reference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_direct_injection

Long story short, it's the same method of injection used in diesel engines.

This is becoming readily available technology in the automotive world. GM seems to be leading the forefront lately. A couple examples are their 304HP V6 Camaro and the 140HP 40mpg 1.4 liter turbo Cobalt replacement.

I don't see Honda having any other choice but adopting this technology to their engines. My particular interest is in what it will do for the K-Series and the aftermarket community, especially given the ENORMOUS naturally aspirated power potential the K-series is able to produce.

I have no conclusion to this, just interested in others thoughts on what the future holds.

I watched this video about this. theyre developing a Direct Injected 65:1 AFR engine that made average power with high fuel economy.

VW does this on the 2.0 motors

Adopting it? Honda already made a 1.4L 4 cylinder DOHC direct-injection gasoline engine called VTEC-DI back in 99'. IIRC it ran leaner than most DI engines with a 60:1 AFR and made 110hp. Honda put it in a concept car for an auto show. Don't think it went anywhere after that??????? I can only imagine what Honda has been doing with 10 Years of R&D on there VTEC-DI.

Direct injection is coming...We (porsche) are now using it in most all of our models with great results. Lower emissions, more power, better efficiency, and less prone to detonation,so higher static compression ratios can be used with the same octane fuels.
Its an awesome technology.
I cant wait to see how it affects our little 4 bangers!
Soon, it will be standard among all car manufacturers. Kinda like how we went from throttle body injection to multi port injection

They already have a K-series variant with direct injection(i-VTEC I) running 65:1 afr. It's in the 2004 Honda Stream. I posted about it a long time ago...

I just realized you posted the video to what I was talking about. They're not developing it, it's already out. I think it's only in the 2004 version of the Stream. No other years have it for some reason.

Full electric is the future, so for all the people who invested in petrol.

If companies like EEstor have what they claim to have, that day could be relatively soon.

Even if they don't, carbon nanotube capacitors are on the horizon.

They also eliminate the need for secondary air pumps by injecting some fuel right as the exhaust valve opens (Bosche)
Multiple injections per cycle
Imagine...K24 Stroker, ITB's, Big *** cams,and Direct injection! 400whp/pump gas FTW!

DI makes for great turbo engines, asa you can run higher compression and greatly reduce turbo lag. My 335i runs 10.2:1 compression and is perfectly happy up to 15-18psi on the stock fuel system. It also makes peak torque at only 1500rpm.

DI is awesome, basically.

The only thing that sucks about it is the engine ticks really loudly like a deisel.

Heres a pretty neat vid that explains a little about it...

BTW- I think the DFI "tick" sounds awesome! like a diesel! LOL

my speed3's are direct injection.

mazdas 2.3 disi engines are amazing.

im dyno'd 273 whp and 298 wtq. intake/exhaust stock downpipe and a bypass valve.

fuel economy isnt so great...22 mpg average...28 hwy...but im hard on it! has so much torque. previous dyno before the bypass valve..all else same 254 whp and 335 wtq!

all on dyno dymanics which reads lower than a dynojet.

it's gonna be the future til gas is no longer...heh
