Default My ugly sleeper build thread

I've always been a huge fan of sleepers and decided to acquire a project one to build up this summer.

Target power: 350 whp
Target budget: $3000

Here's what I'm working with:

specs:

83 Mustang GT
351 windsor
650 cfm Holley 4bbl

plans:

_ strip interior completely
_ racing buckets, custom aluminum 1-piece dash
_ rebuild carb, may switch to edelbrock
_ edelbrock intake
_ msd ignition
_ mild street cam (grind undecided)
_ tint
_ copper/black two tone paint
x cobra R 17x9 wheels, 20mm offset
_ 245/40/17 tires (brand undecided)
_ flowmaster 40 series dual exhaust

also considering:
_ front clip swap to early 90's style
_ caged

The build probably won't get rolling until I get out of school the first part of May, but I figured I'd post this up to get some input, as well as being able to post updates more quickly as it progresses.

I've decided not to post costs until the build is finished.

Comments and criticism welcome

4/8/09

Picked up some Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R's in 245/45/17 and some 17x9 Cobra R wheels this afternoon.

any thoughts on paint codes for a nice copper/burnt orange?

a friend of mine had a mildly built 5.0 with the vortech supercharger that went 11.4 all day, car was mean. Same disgusting maroon interior too, when i get older and have the cash a built lx notchback is definately in my future, they are the lightweight muscle cars, essentially the civic of that genre. GL with your build

A v8 mustang on 17 cobra R wheels is no sleeper. No matter how you look at it.

Looks like it will be a fun car though.

Good luck!

I don't think it is a sleeper if you put those rims on it... just keep those current rims.

Or paint it, for that matter.

Keep it on some steelies, maybe get some widened rear steelies.

Keep a sh*t paintjob on it.

Do a single exhaust pipe so people think it's a 4-cyl 'Stang.

I'll probably leave it as-is and just build the engine for a while, but as soon as those tires are gone the new wheels will have to go on.

I would keep the front end you have and dont get flowmasters since they flow like **** compared to magnaflow, or bullets

Clearly, you don't understand the definition of sleeper.

how is it a sleeper, after you painted it black and gold, threw wheels on it, tinited it and put a loud exhuast on it.

isn't that just like any other mustang?

i say leave it as is, build the motor/ swap in 03+ cobra motor?

y not? thats how all mustangs are. the only reason this wont be a sleeper is cuz sleepers are supposed to be fast. a high 13 low 14 second v8 is not fast

More engine goodies on the way. Edelbrock performer intake, MSD HEI distributor, AL6 ignition, Blaster coil, Edelbrock AVS 650 thunder series carb, Pistol grip shifter. Tempted to get some trick flow valve covers they're sooooo sweet.

Doesn't sound like its going to be too sleeperish but still sounds like a great build you have planned

A cammed 351 in a stripped fox body should be good for 12's at least.

OP: ditch the flowmasters if you want power; they don't flow well at all.

I like magnaflow mufflers. Dynomax super turbo mufflers also make good power and they are relatively cheap, too.
