Icon6 Power steering ...comes and goes

90 Civic Sedan, all factory w/ 291k.

Two weeks ago I turned into a parking spot, heard a squeeking noise, really cold outside. On the drive home nothing. The weather has been really funky in Seattle lately, so I though maybe the outside temp was doing something. Next day the power steering wasn't working all the time. Literally comes and goes in the middle of turns. I don't have cash to fix it, as I just dumped $800+ into our Odyssey's tune up.

Can I just cut the power steering belt?...without it hurting anything.

I can't believe I didn't do that yet. Where's the hammer head icon when I need it. When I leave in the morning for work, it's dark. When I leave to go home, it's dark. ...but today, I get to leave at 3p! I swear the attorneys are pushing basic knowledge out of my head from dealing with their whining.

Thanks for the wake up call. I'll check it first thing when I get to the park&ride today...with daylight. :-)

Fluid level is fine. Don't leave any drip marks when I pull outta my parking space. Problem happens less often when the car is warm.

Don't care about the heavy steering. You'd actually have a better feel for the car. My CRX and 93 CX never had PS, and I loved those cars. Even my 90 Accord lost PS. It was heavy, but about the same as my friends 97 DX HB.

If I can get outta work with the sunshining one day this week, I'm just gonna cut the belt. It feels to be at a replacement stage, so I'm assuming it's slipping...causing the fade in/out of PS.

I'll rip out the rest of the PS system when I have the time. I assume weight loss to be around 5-10 pounds. Noticable in a small Civic.

cutting the belt wont do anything. as long as its just a crank to PS pump belt.

My power steering would shake and go out; turns out it was my battery. So I replaced it and that fixed it.

my power steering on my 06 civic si will sometimes go out for some reason after I start the car. If I restart the car the power steering will work every time; after I restart the car. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Also my air bag icons stay on. I've tried rebooting the electric system; but they stay on. Does anyone have any experience with that as well?
