B16a bad rod bearings/crankshaft bearings?? How to replace??
Ok well long story short my b16a is knocking from the bottom-end, thats a fact.
The engine has stock internals and a no-name ebay flywheel, and a unorthodox light weight crank pulley. I've driven about 60,000 miles since I installed the flywheel and crank pulley, and say around 100,000+/- on the engine.
Here's a short video of the problem, turn your volume up.

Here are my questions....
1. Is their anyway of knowing which bearing it is before tearing the engine apart?
2. Any special tools involved to replace bearings?
3. Can I leave the pistons in the cylinders while doing this work?
4. Can a "shade-tree" mechanic do this work by following the factory service manual, or does this require skill from experience?
5. Anyone have any helpful tips/tricks on replacing bearings, how long would this take?
Please only serious technical responses...

Check the crankshaft for damage too. Ie. if it's still within Honda's specs.

I would say, Yes, it requires some skill. To do it right You will need to mic the crank to make sure it was not damaged. If you indeed spun a rod bearing then there will be damage to the crank.
I dont recomend just replacing the bearings and calling it good. Not to mention there is gonna be metal in your oil, filter, oil gallies. All that metal has probably scored other parts of the motor too.
When you spin a bearing you should tear the motor down and inspect everything. Otherwise you run the risk of the motor breaking again. My 2 cents
To answer your question you can replace main and rod bearings with the motor in the car and the pistons/rods still in the car. I dont recomend this though. I did it once way back in the day and had very poor results

Thanks dumbass. To bad I already said I had the service manual, their seems to be an epidemic in people who can't read. I'm only asking for serious technical first hand advice, not serious first hand dumbass epidemic posts.
What does it matter if there's any way to tell WHAT BEARING is bad before you tear into the block? Anyone with any sense is going to FIRST make sure the crank is ok, then IF it is not damaged, you would replace ALL THE BEARINGS. It's not really any more work to replace all of them than just one set.
IF you're giong this far, you MIGHT AS WELL replace the piston rings and freshen up the whole bottom end. I'm sorry if that's not the answer you wanted...but it's the truth.
Just an FYI....next time, you need to check that sh*tty *** attitude at the door if you're ASKING for advice. Noone on this forum is at your beck and call to answer your questions! It's Friday night for God's sake....and you're bumping your thread like you expect people to drop what they're doing to answer all your questions. Another piece of advice....DON'T BE THAT GUY! If you have a problem with me saying that, you can just back out of this forum and go back to the place from which you came.
You must be a little dull not being able to figure out what to do having the helms in front of you.
Carry on.
Carry on.
What the Hell do you WANT, Man?! He just told you to make sure the crankshaft was within spec before you did anything else.

Yeah I will carry, and you must be dull. Anyone who's basically gonna rebuild a bottom-end of an engine for the first time (who's in their right mind) would ask for some first hand advice/tips, regardless of having the serivce manual.
If this is your first time. Remove the motor and put it on a stand. Or at the very least if you have no hoist. Pull the head and the tranny. Then you and good buddy can remove the block by hand. (harder then it sounds, but easier then doing all the work still in the car IMO) I personally hope you have a hoist
You have to mic the crank. If you dont and it is wasted, then all the stuff you do will be for nothing. You cannot eyeball a crank unless the damage is SEVERE. Clearence needs to be perfect. Oil pressure is made in the bearings. To much clearence and no pressure
This is all very general info. EVERYTHING you need to know is in that book.
Like the others said, You should really hone the block, replace piston rings, rod bearings, thrustwashers and main bearings. Replace front and rear main seals also.
Any more help will be very involved and hard to do on a forum. Dont let the fact this is your first time discourage you. Every body had to learn some time. (even the best.) And right now your block is wasted so the worst that will happen is it will still be wasted when your done
Grab some wrenches and go try!

the only diY here is.. u remopving the block.. and disassembling it..
the rest u take it to the machine shop for inspection..
i really dont get the need for this question/thread....
i mean... what else is there to ask?
unless u have mic's and dial bore guages to inspect everything precisily like machine shops do... ud have to take it to a reputable machineshop..
either way.. if DIY is an excuse to cheap out.. then it wont work so well this time

here... to help u further..
1. Is their anyway of knowing which bearing it is before tearing the engine apart?
--- no... from the vid u either have noise from the mains or rods.. and no u cant just replace 1 main bearing and leave the others... it would be very einstein of u to do that
2. Any special tools involved to replace bearings?
--- no special tools u remove the bearings by hand... except u have to disassemble the engine with the right tools, a torque wrench comes in handy when assembling
3. Can I leave the pistons in the cylinders while doing this work?
--- have the engine on the stand (off the car) u can leave the pistons as is
but u still have to remove it to properly install the crank and torque the rods
again.. very einstein if u not myt aswell replace piston rings on that high miler
4. Can a "shade-tree" mechanic do this work by following the factory service manual, or does this require skill from experience?
---if u understand the manual, and wont skip a step just to cut cost, and have all the needed tools.. that shade tree mech can do it atleast decently
5. Anyone have any helpful tips/tricks on replacing bearings, how long would this take?
--- no tricks, its very basic 101 , how long will it take depends on ur tools , machine shop turn around time (spin a bearing and ur crank is damaged) and basic skill level
there ya go.. i made it sound simpler than it ever is... so if its overwhelming.. then replace the motor.. that would prolly be the easiest hehe

I do appreciate your help d15beta.
cant really get over ur first time without actually trying it.. so def give it a shot..
but i do suggest... dont do it if ur pressed for time... thats always the haymaker on the plan hehe
