Help with type r valve springs
Ok heres the deal I have type r valve springs installed on a b16 head with brand new standred b16 valves along with buddy club spec 3 plus cams. Assuming my springs bind at 13.1, then 11.6 should be my limit which is just a hair under my cams but with all other variables it should be fine.
So I had the machine shop do a pressure test, valve job, and installation. My question is, when I got the springs put on at the machine shop they said it measured 75lbs of pressure on the seat (with no lift). It seems that the type r should be at 42 pounds with no lift and 79 pounds at .200 lift, wtf? Could it be due to the valves (I thought they were the same size just heavier than the type r's. Im also wondering what it means when it says (the receipt) 550 travel at 456. Is that lift compared to height? which seems also way off.
Someone help me out!! thanks, brett

75 lbs on the seat is alot. If those numbers are correct, they are def not "R" springs. Also, the "550 at 456" statement makes no sense to me. Oh, and "R" binds before 13.1mm
They have red and white ink on em but otherwise yes. I bought a vtec head and the guy said he'd throw in the valve springs also. Someones got to know what .550 travel @ .458 means. I believe its lift vs height in inches. Does that even make sense? Oh well, if not I'll head back up to the shop and ask em about that and the seat pressure also. Is there even a aftermarket spring with that kind of pressure? I've always been kinda sketchy about machine shops (because i dont know what Im doing so I cant confirm anything) and this one is pretty much domestic only(cause thats all there is in my county), so.......
Combustion, do you think these cams will be okay. In my original post I subtracted 1.5 for the coil bind issue, even though I kinda over the limit by a .2. Im also thinking if its 75 at on the seat what would it be when it starts to compress? Type r springs also get in trouble at 160 pounds, correct?

ITR have yellow paint on them like the leftmost spring in the picture.
If the "550 @ 458" is nonsensical then nobody knows what it means other than it's wrong, not useful etc. Normally you quote total travel capabilities by saying "can support total travel of 0.550" if installed at 1.320" using 'x' retainer." That's a spec that is useful. I hate low IQ'd, low moral, low ethics parts slingers like the ones that sold you your shiatt.
Sorry to make you feel bad but next time go with some legit peeps.

Get a good valvetrain from a reputable source, OR take what you have to someone who actually knows what they are doing.
Calm down fellows its not only them its me also. Now as far as the shop I expect them to know what there doing and know it good(not saying they dont) but they have to go off of what the customer brings and tells them. On the springs , I bought it from a person on his word that it was what it was, everybody knows thats a no no and your taking a risk but I really had no way of clarifying with actual measurements that they were type r's (I probably should of done a lil more research, then I wouldve known they were suppose to be yellow). I only payed 300 for a complete b16 head with mani, injectors, tb, cams, and the type r springs which were in there own little fedex bag. Ive read someone else say they had red and white on there type r's. Could it be a ctr you think, are they any dif. Its not like I can check the part numbers or I would of done that.
Now on the .550 @.456 I called the shop today and he said it was Max travel = .550 (13.97 mm) and the lift on my cams are .456 (11.6), now why it says @ i have no idea. He only knows the cams lift because thats what I said it was on the intake. He also said that he measures the valves to get the length for the springs at install height. He then puts them on something to measure the pressure at that height and it came to 75lbs. Does that make more sense? The only thing on the springs is maybe there ctr's or they werent measured the same way as Master of the Universe measured em. If you didnt know Im getting the itr spring info off of what you posted on your spring pressure test.
Combustion, if they were type r springs and buddy club spec 3 plus cams do you think they would work together up to 8500 rpm? Is there any aftermarket springs with that kind of pressure at install height? No one ever answers my question directly.
The cam is another thing (I gonna get flamed a new one for this), I bought it off a person on honda-tech and he didnt send me a box or a spec sheet. I havnt been to worried about checking this out, which I know I should and will know before its installed. It does have a t stamped on the end and a very different looking lobe which are both known to be bc, but I'll get into that later.
Thanks for all the help, brett

If the machine shop is competent then they can tell you what lift your valvetrain can support. Doesn't matter if it's a Chevy, Ford or Honda.
Honda ITR/CTR is no where near 75lbs on the seat no matter which way you measure.
Please post pics and I can take a shot at identifying. I can also calculate the spring pressure if you can give me accurate measurements of wire dia, number of live coils and OD. I've got spring design softwate I use to design springs.

Master of the Universe, I just stated in my previous post what the max lift was and what my cams lift was. Here are some pics of the springs next to stock b16 springs and also by thereselves. See if you can tell me if these actually are buddyclub spec 3 plus cams. Thanks, brett

1. Are those springs from Rev? Any Rev reps or users out in this forum that can confirm? Those are definitely not Honda, definitely not CTR.
2. The out spring has 5.3 coils and the inner has 7.3 coils. The inner is going to have limited travel.
3. The outer spring has a very thick wire. Looks more than 0.152 in dia.
4. The inner spring looks like 0.113 wire.
Reccomendation: I would just run the outer springs for the BC3. You'll be better off.

They seem to work fine when I ran them but I ran into a little rod vs block problem due to what appears to be a severly spun bearing. I will heed your advice on the bc3's and springs. Do those appear to actually be buddy club spec 3's? Would running the stock valves create a problem with just the outers and b16 inners? What about as it sits now? I understand it would probably be more harsh with that kind of pressure. We had no problems with the head, all clearances were fine. What kind of pressures do you think it would be running if they were actually rev's? I stated the seat pressure and travel do those match what revs are suppose to be. I appreciate your help lol.
