question on buying a teg
found a clean teg on CL. guy says it only has a MHG no name brand(haha go figure) and ARP studs. the car has a prescsion sc51(internaly wastegated) very similiar to the sc61 used commonly on grand nationals and some supras its good for like eh 300-600 horse from what i have been told. and is bascially a very reliable turbo. guy took it to a shop and ahd the turbo put on with tial waste gate and BOV. took it to a shop thats eh kinda sketchy up here. head good and bad things about it. its on a 96 spec ITR motor. he said hes running 9 lbs. on stock itnernals except the MHG and studs. and ran a 12.6 on street tires. and is pushing 308 whp. Anything seem fishy to anyone? he said it beats evos like nothing. think guy is trying to rob someone sell the car and take the money and the motors going to go?
$6500, when i replied he said he doesnt know hwo it was tuned by, doesnt know what kinda tuen was performed, its a greddy MHG but he didnt ahve the deck blocked or the head milled to the correct RA value for the HG. and he used copper sealer. which greddys mhg's ahve a sealer incorporated with them which the copper sealer i guess messes it all up. he said its been bosted at 9 lbs for 50k. think the mtoor cant take much more?
have you done the standard leak down test, drove the car and figured out if it seems solid. provided the JDM ITR swap is in good shape and the turbo is done correctly, that setup in a clean shell with nice wheels would fetch 7k pretty fast around here.
from what you just posted, the boosted for 50k would have me worried. most of those engines came over here with 40-50k miles. if it went 50k more the tune can't be too bad. i'd do a leakdown before i discuss any price. also, honda factory milling is the correct ra for MLS, that's why they don't leak. the factory gaskets are MLS. if he had done something wrong, you would see signs after 50k....think about that. still, you're talking about a 100k mile ITR engine and a boosted one at that. if it has the correct LSD transmission that's another bonus. i'd say his price is fair if the motor checks out. if it doesn't. keep in mind what you will need to be doing. basically a tear down for new rings, a hone, bearing inspection and a bunch of gaskets.
