4 Speed vs 5 speed transmission
I have tried to use the forum search, but it apparently isn't working.
I have a 91 hatch with the 4 speed tranny. I also have a 5 speed tranny sitting in my garage. I'm wondering if it is worth it to swap out the 4 sp for the 5 speed.
I am currently averaging 40 mpg and don't travel much on the interstate.

I'm with him, I did a 4 to 5 speed swap on my old hatch. Thing would barely keep pace going up a slight incline in 5th. I should have just left the damn 4 spd in. Waste of time in my opinion unless the trans is in bad shape.
Just go down to a local junkyard, get yourself a 5 speed shift ****, screw it in. About the same results for a lot less work.

Funny stuff, but true, my 5sp never sees 5th gear even on the highway, I'm sitting at 2k doing 65/hr in 4th. I get like a zillion miles a gallon too.
I just went for a short drive, my 5 speed barely makes it up a hill in 2nd. I can't even go uphill in 4th. It's going to be a pain in the *** to change too, not worth the slight gain in my opinion
it also depends on what 5 speed transmission you put it. results are doing to be different if you have an hf tranny vs an si tranny. theyre geared different. the hf is geared for fuel economy while the si is geared for acceleration. you'll be running ~3500-4000rpms on the highway going 70-80mph with the si. compared to the hf which is a lot less.

it would be.
at least if you lived in florida like me. we dont have many of those things those other people were talking about...."hills"? the biggest "hill" around me is the bridge leading over to the beach

With my 4speed I'm at 3K RPM at 65Mph. If by swapping a DX 5 speed I can get my RPM's down lower and get bettter gas mileage. right now I'm only getting 32MPG. That's mainly highway running 60-70.
Yeah, I know. I've pretty much upgraded my STD to a DX with my spare DX parts, except the 5 speed tranny. I know they made the STD as a more economical vehicle to purchase, but It seems as though they made the 4 spd just for the STD? Or was the 4spd more fuel efficient (though maybe less speed as the motor didn't have as much horsepower as the DX motor)?
I did have an LX sedan that had the 5 speed but I don't remember the MPG.

the dx trans will net you better mpg's at cruising altitude than the 4 grinder.
I rarely travel above 70 mph in Vermont. Most of the time I am not on the interstate and am traveling 55 mph, which barely puts me in the 5th gear range.
my STD is a CX cuz it is canadian
5 speed standard.... FTW.
But seriously, I can't go up steep hills in 5th gear. I end up downshifting to 4th.
5 speed is better than 4 speed. Better gas mileage. Straight up. At 110km/h, I sit at around 3k.

If your still 3k RPM at 70MPH with a 5 speed then that is just about the same as my STD 4 speed(+/-200RPM's).
