heard some rumors about california bar...
i heard some rumors saying that all bar stations are closed now in california??? is it true? because i need to get my car bar'ed...there was a thread once with the phone number to the bar station (i think there was only one number for all bar station kinda like 911 for cops, fire....etc) and i need that number, need to get my car bar'ed!!! smog is already up...HELP!
1-800-622-7733
I used this number to schedule all my appointments with them (a lot of them). As far as I know all they changed was the portion that would actually help those that couldn't afford the repairs on their car. Apparently make those that are supposedly in "violation" is still good business in this economy.

well, I don't know if you're trying to become a lawyer or get your car to be street legal in the state of California.
The California Bar association is a government entity responsible for ethical conduct of attorneys, etc.
Or there is also the Bureau of Automotive Repairs.
The CARB, on the other hand, California Air Resources Board, or ARB for short, NOT to be confused with the Bar, which is something entirely different, is the government entity that ensures the state of California is compliant with the federal clean air act and the extra little goodies our local government has unilaterally decided to add to it.
Anyway, to answer the OP's original question, the answer is NO, the ARB is not closed.
The CARB is the entity that ensures that all new vehicles comply with the state environmental laws. Each car manufacturer pays truckloads of cash to the state so the CARB can run a bunch of hippie, tree-hugging, emissions test to make sure that they satisfy California's unnecessarily higher than average standards for emissions.
Not only do they hoard cash from the poor automobile manufacturers, they also rob all aftermarket auto part manufacturers who wish to sell their products to people who plan to use them on public highways. This includes everything from catalytic converters to fuel injectors.
This is why you always see a big disclaimer on parts purchased in California that say "for off road use only."
This clause was not put in there for your amusement by imagining your little front wheel drive Honda running along side a dune buggy out near Havisu. This clause was put in there because while the aftermarket part manufacturer may seem like a "big" company, they are not "big" enough to fork over the thousands of dollars it costs to have the CARB thieves steal their hard-earned profits to make sure they meet all the state's unreasonable standards.
The short of the long: If you are thinking about having your car CARB certified, be prepared to pay a whooping $3000 per hour for a CARB testing facility and staff. And you thought getting your car tuned was expensive! Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!
The local CARB office is located at:
9480 Telstar Ave. Ste. 4
El Monte, CA 91731
They can be reached at (626) 575 - 6798
If you happen to have $3,000 laying around, you can either give it to me, or you can give it to Steve Mazor, manager of AAA Automotive Research center, Diamond Bar. (909) 612 - 2564. He will gladly take your cash from you.
Oh, BTW, just because you pay $3,000 doesn't mean your car will get certified. The $3,000 is just to pay for the test. If you fail, it is up to you to figure out how to get it to pass. Oh, and it's not like the local smog shop where if you don't pass, you don't pay. If you don't pass, you get to come back and fork out another $3,000.

Good luck and happy tuning
P.S. If you think this is a bunch of BS, make sure you go out and effing vote next time!

Whoever wants to have a car CARB certified? That's like a million components that they have to look at. Not to mention, when the car is first sold in CA or USA, it's already qualified for street use.
The OP probably wants to know where to get his swapped motor or modifications looked at by the state referees, who are trained by B.A.R. to inspect these things.
When someone here mentions BAR, or BAR'd .... it's usually understood as having things inspected and approved by these state referees. If your swap is done right and meets all smog regulation, you get a sticker from BAR basically saying it's legal to drive on public roads with such and such mods.
Oh yeah, these referee stations were shut down for a while, but now are back. It only costs $8 for these isnpections.

The other info. was in case he failed the BAR.
It is basically a two step process.
For example: My car failed the BAR inspection because I have a turbocharger on a non-turbo equipped vehicle. So if I want to legally drive my vehicle WITH the turbo installed, I would have to go take it to get CARB certified to make sure it meets all emmissions standards.
Since I don't have thousands of dollars laying around to have the CARB certification done, I am forced to remove it and make my car NA again.
I'm the type of person who will not accept defeat, so I did my research to try to find a way to keep my turbo legally. While it is POSSIBLE, I can't afford it.
This is why if someone wants to turbo their vehicle, it is better to buy a turbo kit that is made by a company that has already paid the big bucks to have these tests performed and the certification completed.
That is why CARB legal turbo kits are so much more expensive.
Kick back on the hate bro. This was only supposed to be some extra info in case he was thinking about doing this.
