I was thinking of painting a CRX in my driveway with a makeshift paint booth constructed out of plastic sheeting (like ground cover) and maybe 2x4's or pvc pipe for the frame. I was going to run an exhaust fan that had a filter on it to trap paint particles before it leaves.
Is this legal in California or does it depend on the city also?

I can think of two answers for that question:
-No.
&
-It's only illegal if you get caught.
You might want to look into a rent-a-booth near you.
I know there was one in LA called community truck and auto paint booths. Ive used them before. Or something very similar. It'll be much better for the environment if you rent a booth, plus you get to use their air compressor, you won't have anyone criticizing you (if they do) and you'll get a cleaner finish in the paint (meaning less dust and particles.)

I'll keep searching for a "rent-a-booth", but I don't think there is one near me and LA is about a 6hr drive that I don't want to make.
Maybe there is one near me, I'll search around.
I heard somewhere it was fine to do part of the car in the driveway, but not the whole car. I would love to rent a paint booth anywhere near me if possible, but I don't think there are any accept the community college paint booth, but you have to be a student and also take the autobody class which usually is always filled up.

^right, its not that popular of a business yet. but i think it'll get bigger. best way to find out about regulations exactly, i think would be to contact the CARB california air resources board. it might be different per county. in my county, there is no smog check because the air is clean.
get caught and theres a good change you'll have a hell of a fine to pay and/or go to jail... if you're doing a rattle can you might get away.. but a makeshift paint booth... you're asking for trouble.. california is one of the strictest states. thats why everything is waterbase now

What are some types of water based paints?
I think I'm going to call the city and ask if it is allowed, that is if I can't find rent a booth type place near me. I would much rather do it in a booth, but I really don't think there is a place near me that does that.

Can anyone else fill me in on this too? I plan to paint a car in my garage and vent it out through the garage vent. Anyone know if this is good as long as you don't get caught? I'll be shooting paint with the garage closed, the only door that will open is the door back into the house.
I had a local business come out and repaint half of my rear bumper on the side of the street. That's their entire business model as well, plastic repair and repainting on site.
I don't think its necessarily illegal if using certain types of paint, or such a business would never have survived for several years (they've been around for quite some time).
Wish I knew the real answer though.

overspray is going to be a bitch! what my teacher told me was put 2 exhaust fans out the garage and cover everything. then at the end of the 2 exhaust fans put 2 of those spinkler type things that fan side to side to water the grass and it'll catch the overspray and bring it to the floor.
i thought you cant wipe your *** in california, because the TP is bad for the earth...seriously...go to nevada and drop a nuke or 2 while your at it.
i thought it sorta depends on the paint.. like using car paint.. and painting your car.. illegal.
rattle can / any other paint, painting your car,, like painting a piece of wood. not illegal.

the last time i talked to a SATA rep. we were talking about the new mini jets and he was saying something about as long as the cup size was a certain size (i dont remember what size he said, but i know its a small one) then it wasnt illegal.. kinda like how its not illegal to use a spray can outside... so maybe talk to a SATA rep. if you really want to know..

Definitely check with your local law, because HT is not going to always get it right : )
I don't know how legal that is, because here in PA there was a new report exposing companies doing this in Philadelphia and they got shut down. Apparently that was only within Philly's limits, but I doubt Cali is gonna be any lighter with restrictions.

i live in pa. i know when we painted my car in a make shift booth, we got warned and watched by the local police. i guess the over spray going out the door kinda gve it away. we just hung plastic sheeting up and put a fan in the door way. we only painted at night, but more than a few times, the police would sit right up the alley as if they were waiting to hear the guns start up. we got warned once, and they told us if they caught us, we could get a fine for up to $2000. in california, i'm SURE it would cost more than that.
I heard it's between 10-20k fine if you're caught violating. No, it is not legal to do this. The only possible loophole is using water-based paint like rustoleum for house hold projects, but I have a feeling all of that will become null and void as soon as you add reducers and/or hardeners to the paint. It's really not worth it. Spend the little money you have and go to a maaco or something.
