lock assy steering help
I have a 2001 Accord. I bought a honda oem part #35100-S84-A33. I need to know how do I remove the 2 bolts that hold the upper bracket on? They are the head break off type, so it looks like a rivet now. Help.
Thanks,
Mike

Honda instructions are to center-punch both shear bolts and drill off each bolt head with a
drill bit.
My preferred method is to use a punch and a hammer.
1. Punch the bolt head at 3'O clock.
2. Slightly angle the center punch and punch the bolt out counterclockwise.
3. Do the same to the other bolt.
4. Once both are loosen continue to twist the bolt using your fingers.
It comes off pretty easy with a punch, only takes me less than a minute.

Thanks a lot, that worked. But now I have another problem. The car won't start. It just cranks but won't start. Everything else seems to be ok. I'm getting power to other items.

newer honda have factory immobilizes in their key cylinders ie the black thing on top of the lock cylinder on the left.. the ecu requires the chipped key to start the car its honda's attempt at anti theft..
i have no idea what u replaced so im guessing u replaced the lock cylinder...?

I replaced the lock cylinder and got new keys. How do I get the car to start now? Is there a way to program the immoblizer unit or can I just replace that part with the old unit?
hmm i can only guess on your words.. not even sure if u have the immobilizer.. do u have the black box on your old cylinder?
if so then u do have the immobilizer and that is the reason why u cant start your car..
you will need to have honda dealership reprogram it to work with your new cylinder
if it is infact the immobilizer switch back to your old cylinder dont install the steering lock... assuming u have problems with turning the key or something stick the key in.. and start the car using the ignition switch side. then when u have time go to the dealership and seewasup

nah i dont think it work that way... your key store the code needed to start the car.. the box just reads the key there is a way to start the car without it by using the ebrake or something seen it done but its temporary wouldnt work after the car is shut down... and wouldnt work unless u know the code to the key... call your honda dealership they know more about this than i do get some prices and see how much it cost for them to reprogram it..

The Immobilizer system logic is in the ECM/PCM, the Immobilizer receiver needs to send the proper code to the ECM to start it. You can read about here.

Since you had key cylinder problems, do not reinstall the old cylinder. Tape the old key near the steering column (near where the immobilizer receiver is) and then start it. When you get a chance, bring it to a Honda dealer to reprogram the immobilizer and ECM.

Another option is to tape the old key inside the plastic steering wheel cover to hide it and forget about it. The Immobilizer won't function as a theft deterrent; but you save money.
I tried this and it didn't work. Guess I will have to go to the dealier and have them reprogram the ecu to work with the new key assy and new key.
I was hoping it would for you. Here is another TSB regarding using a temporary key and the old key to start:

the reason the car won't start is the immobilizer unit is locking you out there 2 temp fixes to get you to the dealership to get the key reporgramed 1 is to get the immobilizer brake code it's 5 diget code you enter with the brake pedal to allow the car to start and drive until shut off for 10 mins then the code has to be entered again, the other is to cover your new key's head with tin foil to block it's code and put your old key in the black keyring area the immobilizer should see your old and let the car start!
