Timing belt just snapped. Trying to get the crank bolt loose at the pulley. No luck so far. It is not a reverse thread is it?

You can also use a special hex tool (see Amazon) to hold the pulley in place with a breaker bar and another long breaker bar with an extension to bust the bolt loose.

The $30 ebay tool (two metal rods welded onto a big nut) works great.

Use the tool, a breaker bar, and some extensions. Rest the extensions of the breaker bar on a jackstand and then put the breaker bar at a ~45-60º, pointing towards the front of the car, and give it a big heave. Use the tool to hold the crank pulley still and the bar on the tool will rest against the front control arms

Buddy of mine has a 3/4 impact, thinking of giving it a shot. A little scared it might twist it off though. Another thing, can't I put a timing belt on without taking the pulley off?

No.

Well, I bet you could, if the lower timing belt cover wasn't on the car... but it is, so nope.

Don't do that... if you do that then you won't be able to put it back on. And without a timing belt cover, your timing belt is exposed to more dirt, etc. and won't last as long. It's really not good for it.

I know, but breaking the pulley bolt off then your really F-ed. Timing won't be spot-on but will be close enough.

Why don't you try using the tool to get it off? I've changed two timing belts and each time, the impact wasn't enough to budge it. I used the tool, a breaker bar, extensions, a jackstand, and a pipe and gave it a quick blow and it came loose, both times.

Don't take shortcuts, just use the tool and a breaker bar.

i just took mine off today actually, just used a breaker bar and a deep socket, jack up the car way high so you have room to swing the bar underneath, and get someone to go inside the car, put it in gear and step on the brakes real hard. then, position the breaker bar so that you can grab onto the front of the car and push on the breaker bar with your foot. your legs are much stronger than your arms =D

Okay fellows, I've been in the shop working tonight and worn SLAP as out from fooling with this thing. I'm gonna hit it again Saturday and see what happens. This is not like the first time I've done timing belts. I've done numerous ones and have NEVER had one that's a pain in the *** like this. Most of the time if I can't get it to break with an impact wrench, I throw a little heat to it and it breaks right aloose, not this time. Gonna try again tomorrow and do what Red suggested. I did pull the belt out as it was broke anyways, 140k on it I'd bet anything!

I have a hex tool for you to use, I just bought it and it doesn't fit on my car, but it does fit on yours. Where are you located? Your profile says WV? I'm in morgantown

leave the car in 5th gear...heat up the bolt and throw water on it right after so it shrinks, then blow it off with the gun. worked on my s2000 and I tried everything and I also had the tool to hold it.

I've tried heating it a couple different times. The water shrinks the bolt?

ya because heat expands it and cold shrinks it...give it another shot with water. Mine came off too easy with the impact after that. I'm telling you before the heat and water we tried everything lol

Damn. You're pretty lucky. lol

I used two different 3/4 impacts and a pretty big craftsman compressor and I couldn't get it to budge.
