Default battery light with a mind of its own

my battery light flashes at random. sometimes right when i start the car, other times it stays off. it mostly happens when the rpm hits 5 or 6k.
the radio can be on as loud as i please and its fine. and my voltmeter doesnt drop. the battery is brand new so are all the connections and grounds in the engine bay.
whats causing this?

i would like to know as well. i was told though that it may be that the regulator inside of the alternator may be on its way out. mine is doing the exact same thing, but i dont have any voltage drops. light comes on and off as it pleases.

hey man, it could always get worse. just thankfully its not. other people got it worse than a simple alt change. and 95 bucks isnt bad at all for an alt.

The battery icon on that light is misleading. It is actually the charging system warning light. Toad's right to check the alternator but check also all charging system wiring and the alternator belt. It could be just a loose connection, even a corroded nut, or simply a loose belt. If it is the alternator, there is a good chance you can just replace the brushes (for $10-$30 for parts). See http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com...alternatortips and http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/alternatorbrushes .

If the alternator has more than 100k miles on it, then the brushes are a strong candidate here. The alternator bearing is also known to fail on older alternators.

Why risk a failure while driving? Change it and eliminate it as a possible cause here. Make sure you get the belt tension right. Not too tight, else it is hard on the alternator. Not too loose, else the charging system will not get the juice it needs. The belt may indeed be the problem.

Belt slipping?

My friend's EK was doing the same alternator thing. Ended up replacing the alternator, adjusted the tension on the belt, and was good to go.

maybe

the light is coming on when that charging circuit opens. could be a brush in the alternator "jumping" or a bad connecting in the alt line, etc.

i had a b16 once that i could damn near use the battery light as a shift light. battery never died, alt held it together. lol
