My first civic... tell me if it was a good deal.
Hello everyone, this is my first post, and its my first civic. I really enjoy reading the forum.
anywho.
I got into a wreck with my 98 ford ranger on friday the 13th. I went on tour with a band, and when i got back i was without a vehicle. insurance paid out 2500 after deductible. so i needed a cash car and quick.
I stumble upon this: a 1999 EX civic, block says D16Y8 for the engine, i dont know if that is the stock one or not, id think it is. 175,000 miles, but the engine was so clean, and ran and shifts super super smooth. No radio as of now.
pics are at the bottom of page, however i need input on a few things
1) on the guages, they dont light up at night, not even my AC ones. however if i put on the E-Brake or a blinker or hazards, that lights up on the guage cluster. is this just a fuse issue?
2) CV boots and powersteering. the car will drain the power steering real quick. and get harder to turn. CV boots are wet with fluid, and their is a whiny sound coming from the general area around the belts/power steering container area. its just a sound like its straining, and then its ok, straining then its okay. car excellerates fine, and i dont believe its from the engine side. maybe the power steering pump? how much am I looking at to put a new power steering pump or pulley, and the CV boots on?
other than that the cars spiffy. im stoked to join the honda crew.

For picking up a late model civic for that price I'd say its good. That does sound like your power steering is going out. I think it may be your gearbox/motor on it not the pump though. The dead CV boots is causing you to lose fluid. As for the gauge lights, in my 92-95 civic, there is a fuse that controls the tail lights, interior lights, and instrument lights all in one. Try replacing that one. If not maybe the previous owner did something silly like take out the bulbs to paint them but ran out of time to put them back in. Worst case scenario though. Great deal I'd say.
thanks bro.
and yeah, it shifts and rides so smooth and the compartment is so clean, that I fell in love with it.
and if all i have to do is bulbs or fuses, and powersteering, im happy.

It might be your dimmer switch. The one in my 99 Civic DX went bad. You can pull the switch, jump the wires with a paperclip and see if your lights work. If they do, then just replace it with a new one.
I have my headlights and licenseplate lights and tail lights.
as in park lights we mean my blinkers and tails stayin on constant with the half click of lights then yes. they work.

U got a great deal..as for the sound its making. I wouldnt worry about it. I removed my power steering. Doesnt make much of a difference. I prefer not to have power steering. And u might as well just change your axels 2. They are cheap. Maybe 130 at the most and really easy to install. And that motor comes stock in that model. Overall i say u got a great deal. Especially for the year of the car. Mileage is still decent. I mean its a honda..u can drive it forever....good choice.
Good choice on a Honda. Though I would have recommended a compression test before purchase, it seems you are on board regardless.
Congrats!! and Welcome!!
Read the FAQ's and search. There is much to learn.
Priority #1 is to follow the link in my Signature. Don't be a statistic!!!

you need to fix the paint problem. There is straight body fillter there where they painted over. It needs to be primed, sealed and repainted. Someone just sprayed over god knows how much filler....
Nice car man, that engine bay is definitely clean. I just picked up a 98 DX hatch yesterday myself, which is also my first Honda. I'm a little jealous of yours though; I don't have a tach!!
