VINCE or anyone...GE block issues...HELP
The shops that's working on my block (bore/hone and installing pistons/rods), said that the pistons stick out 0.020 and said it seems like GE shaved the top too much...or is this common? I'm not sure why so I need some help...
They said they only deck the block .002. So i don't uundertsand how the pistons will be sticing out .02...

Talked to a Honda mechanic and he said the factory pistons should not stick out the top of the block at all...
Well, they're crower rods and they're for the h22a4 also...so i'm not sure which is the problem. it's one or the other. I'm just not sure how to tell which one it is. I left a message with crower...

What piston/rod combo are you using? Have you verified that the rods are the same length as stock? Do the new pistons have more compression height than the stock ones?

Do you know for sure that the block wasn't shaved once or twice before? Also compare your rods to stock length ones to see if that is correct. Call the piston manufacturer to see if .020 can be milled from the top of the pistons but you may have to also cut the valve reliefs deeper also. You can use a thicker head gasket but that will lower your compression ratio.
and earl..... lower compression = more boost!!!!!!!!!
how much do you think the cr will be affected if the piston is sticking out .020 and the gasket is .020 thicker? i realize it will not be back to stock because the head will be taller and the stroke is staying the same... but it should be close.. right?

check your piston pin location, that can affect it also
Yea, that's what I'm trying to find out. I thought I gave the shop the specs on the pistons but they said they don't have it. I'll find out once i get home today.
As far as the history on the block, I doubt there's any such history. it's a 2000 Prelude engine.

hey, news flash....called JE, I have the right part number for the pistons (h22) but they told me they heard of cases where people ordered the wrong pistons (h23) and the pistons stick out .02. Now I'm wondering if maybe JE sent me h23 pistons in a h22 box.
I'm having my shop measure the pistons today and i'll compare it with the spec sheet I got. They better be willing to pay for any extra machine work I have to do because of this...

Just send them back...Your deck heigth is fine....
Stock Pistons should be .020 or .030 in the Hole, so I yours are .020 outta the hole....the bllock woulda been decked like .050...No ******* way GE decked it that much.

Yea, now it get's even wierder...measured the piston and rods a million times and they're exactly at what they should be at. Only possibility is that the block came this way from the factory? what else could explain it? I KNOW GE wouldn't have taken THAT much off....so that leaves the ? as to how it came from the factory?
very wierd...either way, we measured everything and looks like shaving the top of the piston will be fine and the valves won't hit anything. Not the best solution but about the only option i have at this point.

I think you need to call GE....I think the problem lies there. But I had a question. What crank are you useing? Are you sure your not useing a h23 crank?
I guess I'll call them just to verify again. No, the crank is an h22. I bought the engine complete and then tore it apart.
we had a local guy with that problem. from GE.. the other guy in my group took his to a local guy. the local guy actually did a better job.. funny
only charged 500 and did better
they sleeved, over bore, step decked and installed the new pistons ... all he did was put the block on .. funny.. lol

problem can be solved with a thicker head gasket. happened to my old benson block.
ahhhh ****. time to redeem myself here.
i didn't tell u that because i was using a STOCK head gasket on mine. never had a problem with it leaking.. and my pistons were not sticking up beyond the deck. when aebs was blueprinting the block they thought at first that there might be an issue with it but assured me we could fix the problem with a thicker head gasket. i didn't want to tell the whole story at first because i didn't think it was necessary.... now i guess it is. give me a call or IM me if you still have concerns.

I'm the guy that bought the benson block..what your not gonna tell me about that problem ahead of time?? I just changed out the headgasket yesterday because it was leaking for some odd reason...is that the problem y its leaking? Great, i just put in a brand new stock gasket...so its gonna leak again eh? A thicker headgasket should fix your problem but if you bought your pistons already its not the best news you want to hear. I would look at it on the bright side. The HEMI worked well for Mopar.
