The entire assembly is going to be held in place
by hollow dowel pins in the locations where bolts were..

You will have to gently pry up on the assembly in various locations..
(Be careful not to scratch or break anything..)

The oil and old seals around the rocker arm/shaft assembly typically bake on and so cause the assembly to be sort of glued in place. You will want to tap and pry a bit as follows. Use a rubber mallet for the tapping, because the metal used under the valve cover is very soft. Tap, do not bang, because the camshaft lobes are mated against some of the lobes on the rocker arms, and tolerances are close. Tap in a lengthwise direction. A 12-inch crowbar or similar is fine for prying. Pry only upwards. Tabs are on the outer corners of the two end camshaft holders; these are good places to pry gently. When I was removing the assembly, the crowbar ultimately freed one end for me. Then I found some more places to pry, and the assembly came off pretty easily.

You might want to try the rocker arm shafts yada removal section at the free online guide for your Civic at autozone.com . Or a Chilton's has it. You will also need the valve lash section.

you'll also need a valve spring compressor.

I've heard of using a 17mm socket stuffed with paper towel and a mallet to get them off, but i tried it and i really feel it's too rough and i felt i was going to bend a valve in the process.

since you aren't keeping the valves you can use this method. then to reinstall the springs, squeeze them in a vice with a couple peices of cardboard or wood to keep the vice pads from causing any damage. After they are compressed some wrap them in 2 zip ties on opposite sides looping through as many turns as possible, then with everything installed you can use a little torch to melt and break the zip ties to pop the springs into place (also fairly ghetto, but works.)

Really though, I would invest in a valve spring compressor.
