Default Looking to buy an M3 instead of an R talk me out of it...

well for the longest time I told my self once I get outa debt " about a month away " I will start saving for a house and my last ITR to put into the garage of the home.

Ive owned 3 previously and I find my self about 2 days away from buying a 2003 e46 M3. The car is fast sexy and clean, and out of all the cars I have had s2k,350z,TL-S, nothing finds a cure for the itch the ITR has left me with.

The M3 is fast and brute, but is this a car/platform that I should get into? I know asspenny has an M3, craig care to chime in?

I have a feeling if I buy the M I may not ever make it to see and ITR parked in my garage as the door rolls up, but at the same time ri love the brute power and high revs of the m3, but the expensive wear item parts and the labor rates to work on that car scare me ahhhhhh too many sports cars to choose from

and were off.....

I don't know the state of your finances, but going off what you said
1) You are just getting out of debt
2) You will start saving for a house (read: have no house savings yet)
3) If no house savings, possibly no rainy day savings (3 months salary)
4) If no house savings, likely no retirement savings

=

5) You can't afford an M3. Even a used one.

I could be way off though. From what you said, that appears to be the reality of it.

read the service bulletins.

i would concentrate on your 12 month nest egg first.

take care of yourself by getting your finances on solid ground first.

Get a house first,M3 is nice and fast but cost too much $$$ for parts/labor.

I think the two cars are worlds apart. I have driven both several times and used to own an m3. I know the car very well, but sold the car a while ago to pay for school and get out of any troubles that the car may get me into financially. The M3 is fast, fun, comfortable, beautiful, etc. The ITR is simply a fun car and reliable. The cars feel completely different and I think you will like driving the m3 more every day. That is until it breaks down on you or you have to get some work done. However it all depends on your situation. If you can afford the car and the up keep then I highly recommend it. You wont regret. But it is important that you factor in the cost to maintain the car properly. They arent cars that you can let things slide on like a honda. I hope this helps.

Just totaled my 2005 Competition M3, luckily i had been making triple payments and had enough equity to buy my '01 NHBP Type R with Cash...

The difference between $1000 payments and $0 payments is crazy, not to mention if your going to buy a M3...buy a 06-08 M coupe...that is the REAL chasis for the S54.

But be ready and know what your about to get into, 13mpg, $700 rear tires every 6k miles, $900+ brake changes, not to mention MODS! hondas are crazy CHEAP to build! i had totally forgotten, but the M3 was $$$...you can fully build an ItR for the price of interior trim, emblems, wheels and an intake...forget headers and cats...much less a motor build and tuning.

If you can really AFFORD a M-coupe/M3 then go for it, you'll love the S54...but it's still not numbered....hahaha

God I love my R!

its all about trade off IMO!

I would go with the M3 if I was ok with being able to pay for the gas and service
I wouldnt even look back at an itr, what are you guys crazy its a damn M3,
the car has the best of almost everything, its like comparing apples to oranges for gods sake!

think about the look on peoples faces, the number of times youll get lucky with it. besides it a much better dd because you can take it to a work meeting, a fancy hotel,a club and be looked at with class rather than a kid with an itr and yet rape people on the freeway. its resale is awesome, its probably lost all it will loose in value already(m3's do not loose value)! dont look at what it has lost since brand new, compare the price you are paying to the older e36 m3 and see how they hold value after a certain age! but honestly since you even had debt I dont think this car is for you yet, I wouldnt buy the itr, I would invest and collect untill Iam financially really ready for it(thats if you really are into M3's).

What does my post count have to do with anything? I have been reading multiple car forums for almost 9 years now. Only recently did a create a username to contact someone about a part i was interested in purchasing.

Judging by your comments, you are single, don't have a family, and still care about what people think of you when you "roll up" somewhere. That will all pass, and for the record, the panty dropper factor never has nor ever will exist.

If you are an ugly dood, it doesn't matter if you drive a Lambo or a Ferrari. She doesn't really like you if she only wanted to ride in your car anyhow. You keep telling yourself whatever you would like to believe though. Just out of curiousity, you don't have your name tatooed in Chinese anywhere on your body do you?

trunkz(whatever the **** that is supposed to mean) you got to be kidding me, you honestly believe that people do not buy cars for there looks nor care what others think of it? you dont think guys care about what girls think of there cars nor do you think it has an effect on women or scoring? buddy more than half of HT is single just like me and the other portion that isnt still would be happy to have an effect on women with there car, half of HT modifies the looks of there cars for others just as much as they do it for themselves. I can see an integra be cool for a person in there teens however you should look at it from the publics point of view an integra is a kids car, it wont have a positive effect for you at work, sex nor tickets but the m3 will show success for someone who does bussiness(like a real estate agent), it will be an effect on panties yes even for the ugly dudes! and it wont be *** bad with cops as it would be with an itr! judging from your input I can say you are still in highschool (girls still dig honda's there), you drive an neon green ef with a bodykit and wings(dont care about the looks), you are gay(have never seen the effect of a car on women), and you are unsuccessfull to be able to even dream of an M3 therefore making excuses not to like 1!

I agree it's apples and oranges, but based on what you just wrote I'm be surprised if you have driven an E46 M3. The E46 is far from having "the best of almost everything". The M3 is a great highway car, but that's about where it ends. Oh, it does do nice burnouts too, forgot that..

think about the look on peoples faces, the number of times youll get lucky with it.
Seriously? You have that little self confidence/low self esteem? You really want a chick who likes you just because of your car? That's really truly sad.

besides it a much better dd because you can take it to a work meeting, a fancy hotel,a club and be looked at with class rather than a kid with an itr and yet rape people on the freeway.
A fancy hotel? LOL I'll take my rusting GS-R to a fancy hotel. Who gives a ****? It (The M3) is a better DD, it's quiet, soft, and more comfortable. It's not as good of a hauler (as in hauling large items from the store, etc) and it's certainly not as good of a drivers car.

its resale is awesome, its probably lost all it will loose in value already(m3's do not loose value)! dont look at what it has lost since brand new, compare the price you are paying to the older e36 m3 and see how they hold value after a certain age! but honestly since you even had debt I dont think this car is for you yet, I wouldnt buy the itr, I would invest and collect untill Iam financially really ready for it(thats if you really are into M3's).
All vehicles hold their value after a certain point assuming they are in reasonably good condition. The only M3 that has ever really held a strong resale is the E30 M3. The E46 will be no better than the E36. It will be (may be already?) less expensive than an old *** E30 in similar condition. No car is an investment, but the E46 is a lot farther down on the list than some 911s, E30 M3, NSX, even the ITR...

Now I have driven a 6MT M3 for hundreds of highway miles and some track miles. It's a pig on track, an absolute bloated pig. On the highway it was a great car, but I don't personally buy my cars for highway use and even on road trips tend to seek out the backroads instead of sticking with the highways, so for me an E46 is a car I'd never buy.

Craig (Asspenny) still has his ITR and M3. He wants to get the ITR back up and running again to drive it on track. He loves his M3 for normal use, but if you have any desire to do track events the M3 will leave you very dissappointed if you've tracked an ITR before.

I would get a house and an R. You know already you love the R and you dont have any questions about getting one again but you question the M3 ownership.compared to the M3 cheap enough that you can pay it off quicker, have cheaper maintenance and its really reliable which will help you save for a house compared to what might incur with the M3 ownership. Then just pick up an M3 later.

I won't speak for others, but I don't. I drive two beaters that don't get attention. I like it that way. I'm very hesitant to go pickup a 996 because it will get attention I don't need/want. For now, I'm instead putting money into my rusty *** GS-R, I find is slightly more fun to drive around town than the 911 anyways.

you dont think guys care about what girls think of there cars nor do you think it has an effect on women or scoring?
Do you drive your car into the bar, restaurant, etc? I can understand keeping the interior clean, but most girls over the age of their very young 20s really don't give a rats ***. The ones that do, are high maintenance. Something I'd like to avoid anyways.

buddy more than half of HT is single just like me and the other portion that isnt still would be happy to have an effect on women with there car, half of HT modifies the looks of there cars for others just as much as they do it for themselves. I'm sure a % of HT does modify their cars to improve their self image. That doesn't make it a requirement for the others. You are basically saying that anyone with a clean car that's modified for cosmetics is making up for something else. You shouldn't need a car to get a girlfriend, if so.. well like I said above, it's truly sad.

but the m3 will show success for someone who does bussiness(like a real estate agent),
Actually any "luxury" brand will show that for people who give a rat's ***. Realistically a cheap 5 series will show more "success" to idiots than a M3 will show. In your Realtor example, an SUV (any SUV) will be more friendly for the customer. No one should be using an ITR as a Realtor unless they like to annoy customers with a tiny back seat.

it will be an effect on panties yes even for the ugly dudes! and it wont be *** bad with cops as it would be with an itr! judging from your input I can say you are still in highschool (girls still dig honda's there), you drive an neon green ef with a bodykit and wings(dont care about the looks), you are gay(have never seen the effect of a car on women), and you are unsuccessfull to be able to even dream of an M3 therefore making excuses not to like 1!

Disregarding the money issues, it really depends what you use the car for.

The m3 is for sure a lot more comfortable than the R. So for a daily driver, I would go with the m3. It also depends how you drive your car. The m3 cant quite handle tight corners like the R. Also you will feel more involved driving the R.

Cheers.

There is nothing special about m3 you can get that car any time in future but if you don’t jump on a clean R now you might end up never having one.

I wish this was true.....I owned my 2005 Competiton M3 for 14months and depreciation alone cost $13,000! not to mention $1200+ in rear tires..I just sold for $41,000 with 40k miles...tell me that will be worth over $40k in a year from now without a warranty...hahaha, right!

The Car WILL cost more than you think!!! i promise you!

Have a SAVINGS account and NO debt and you'll probably be ok, then the car is INSANE!!!

Here is a YouTube video of My ZCP M3 and myself having a little fun at Palomar Mtn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q1hVE2izPU

And as far as the ItR goes, if you have class and show respect an ItR will do just fine, You will not be looked at like a 'kid', you'll be looked at like "WOW, that is a gorgeous car, Numbered, and PAID for! awesome!". "someone knows what they're doing!" Class is knowing what you can afford and not living outside your reality, if you have a CRAZY stable high paying job or a savings get the M3/M-Coupe, but if not, the R will be a far better choice!!!

IMO
