Icon3 will this pass smog?

so my valves ran into my pistons so im replacing the whole head.

i have a 96 civic with a stock sohc vtec y8

i'm buying from a friend a 95 z6 sohc vtec head, i'll run my distributor from my y8.

heres the main thing, the z6 comes with supertech valvesprings and retainers running STOCK camshaft.

will it pass smog? (CA state emissions)

I dunno if this matters but I thought any engine modification like heads or the block or the entire motor had to me the model year or newer.

im willing to bet if they realize its an older head you will fail :/ but then again idk about cali laws. its a little bit more easier here in iLL to pass emissions (no emissions required for odb1 cars)

He's swapping the whole head though, which happens to be where the date code is stamped.

I couldn't say yes or no to the original question BUT I can point out a couple of key things that could possibly effect your smog outcome.

Visually, it would fail IF and ONLY IF they notice the head is incorrect. It is true that the motor of the car has to be the same year or newer but a replacement head swap is sort of a gray area. If the tech is knowledgeable and looks for that sort of thing then yeah, you have a good chance of failing visual (but maybe the tech won't care who knows).

For emissions I couldn't see aftermarket valve springs having a negative impact on your emissions but the thing is that the Z6 head has a higher volume combustion chamber than your Y8 head does. Having said that, your compression ration should actually go down. That's what you really have to worry about. If I'm not mistaken, my buddy (who is a smog tech) told me that lowering compression shouldn't hurt.

If you want some actual hard info, hit "thesmogman" on here. He's very helpful and knowledgeable with this type of stuff...obviously because it's his profession
