Timing belt broke on my 91 Accord..... Questions
Hi, I'm new here and don't really know much about Hondas. I'm really into rockcrawling and have a pretty built Jeep CJ-7. My daily driver is a 91 Accord EX AT. This morning my timing belt broke on the freeway on my way to work.
Here are my questions:
What motor do I have?
Is it an interference motor?
What could I have damaged? Valves? Head? Pistons?
What am I looking at to fix this?
Thanks guys.
John

Okay, so my head is probably toast. How about the bottom half of the motor? Would the pistons be damaged from hitting the valves?
GraphiteAccord, is the engine in good shape? Miles? Would you be willing to sell just the complete head? Thanks.

Pistons "damaged"? Does this mean like a few cosmetic dings from hitting the valves, or are we talking fatalities here?

Don't automatically assume the valves were damaged when the belt snapped. I had one DOHC in the same situation that had a slight misfire when I decided to to a belt replacement only.. I do this procedure to save friends $$ and that can live with the fact that the car may not be perfect, thats about 1 of 5 DOHC's...they don't have a good track record when it comes to this...
Now your situation is a little different since your car is a SOHC and I've done a dozen of these with no noticeable problems.. You may want to consider changing the belt and H20 pump and see if any damage actually occured..

Oh, no, the motor is the bulk of the cost.
A new H22 from Honda costs like $12 grand, I think.
Hard to find a decent used H22 for $2,500.

You most likely bent the valves, and toasted the pistons.
Just take the new motor, due to all the problems you probably have.
That sucks

Just today we finished putting a H22A4 into a 5th gen base w/bent valves & spun bearings. Total parts was $5500. NEW short block and head (longblock not available)
I would do a leak down test on each cylinder before I condemn the head. You could either slap a belt on or remove the cam to close the valves. I have seen some that do and some that don't bend valves. Don't assume anything.
