Default Watercooled turbos

My turbo is water and oil cooled. I know its not mandatory to use water but I'm wondering what the pros are to doing this? I'm not real familiar with it and like everything else on this site, the search feature isn't working right.

My set-up is still under construction and before I am about to start it up, I want to see if I want to do this or not. I tried asking my friend/builder but he just told me "you don't need it"... so I didn't bother to ask what the perks are even though I was curious.

Does HP come into play when water cooling? I'm pretty clueless and am curious.

Thanks.

ah... but it IS mandatory to run water too. Your assumption is incorrect.

Interesting, I never used the water ports on mine. Are you sure it's necessary?

Yeah, I know PLENTY of people that don't run water when their turbo is set-up for it. Why is it mandatory?

I ran my water/oil t3 with just oil without issues.

I run BOTH water/oil on my BB turbo.

For normal journal bearing though, meh.

Incorrect, my t3/t04e that came with my Rev Hard kit was water/oil cooled (not the turbo I am referring to now in my OP)

its just a temperature issue, the internals of the turbo will last longer if they are not as hot, there is a reason that most oem turbos run both oil and water, reliability and longeveity. if your turbo can run water as well I say take the time to do it right.

so your telling me it's not possible that you got a bb t3/t04 turbo? Ive never see a bushing turbo that was water cooled. You do know that revhard kits had a bb turbo upgrade right?

I have a garrett t25 and it is water cooled and not bb. If your turbo has a water ports, i think you should use them. It is not absolutley necessary but if you have the option to potentially increase the life of your turbo, why not do it?

I have a T28 that has the water ports as well...
I'm with scamp91ex if you have the option and it only helps...
I think it would be lazy not to hook them up

T04Z... I dont run the water ports... Ive NEVER heard of anyone not running them and having a turbo fail them for that reason.... Its more for super long term abuse (as in a diesel truck where the turbo is loaded MOST of the time), as opposed to 10-20 second jaunts.....

I mean sure its there for a reason, for all practical purposes... IMO (and thats all Im saying it is) Its not needed. At all. I dont need another thing able to cause me trouble as far as leaks, nor adding to cooling inneficiency.

I dont run them.

If its the GT35R that you are referring to in your post a month or two ago, then yes, run the coolant lines. ;-)

I run the water lines. Just so you can know its getting cooled. Like on the return road at the track. I just feel better knowing coolant is going thru it pulling some heat out. Kinda gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

+1 for coolant lines

Stock turbo engines use water tokeep the core cool.
Basically, this allows the typcial preppy nOOB to run his car like a mad man on the street and just park it at Starbucks and shut it off. No turbo timer... nothing.

Turbo timers and proper cool downs after running the car hard have the same effect on cooling the core as the water lines.

There are too many turbos WITHOUT water lines to try to say they are totally necessary. They aren't. (Maybe on a ball-bearing since they gum up oil and get gross, but I don't know for sure)

If you have a GT turbo, you have to run them. By using the GT-specific oil restrictor fitting, there isn't enough oil flowing through the turbo to offer enough cooling. You will run into premature failures, and it's just one of those days that you decide to bring your car to a road course just to find out your turbo takes a sh*t.

If the coolant ports are there, just run them. It also lowers turbo discharge air temps as well because the turbo CHRA and compressor is overall cooler (near water temperature) as opposed to near exhaust temperatures.

You also get an option to shut off your car right after a hard pull as well; let's just say you were late for work and you need to turn off your car right after a hard drive without the need to turbo time.

I dont know why you wouldnt run an added feature to increase the lifespan of your turbo..
I mean, how hard is it to pick up some fittings and some fuel line and make a loop into your coolant system..

its a no brainer for me

Ive always had the coolant lines hooked up to my BB turbo(s)
