DIY: Rear Speaker Brackets In a hatch on a Budget
So let me start off by saying that this is my first write up, so bare with me if it's boring. I was messing around w my new hatch and was trying to figure out a better way (read: a PROPER way) to install some 6.5's in the back and make them fit without having to hunt down a rare, but more so over priced set of oem speaker brackets that are pointed to with a red arrow:

Instead, go to the junk yard and pick up a set of the rear cargo trays (the things with the red arrow's pointing at them). they can be found in most 88-91 dx/si hatchbacks, perhaps some standards if the prev. owner installed them. Be sure to grab the bolts!!
Ok so here's what you need:
Before:

After:

Make sure your speakers of choice fits in the modified baskets evenly, then set them aside for now. Take the cargo trays, and cut out the bottom of the plastic cubby like shown(the side holes shown on mine were not required, the prev. owner of the car had mounted oversized 6.5"'s directly to the cargo trays instead of using a bracket and cut the wholes out to try to make them fit):

Once the bottom is cut out, install the cargo trays into your vehicle, then take your baskets with the speakers installed and test fit them on the now modified cargo trays. If any additional removal of plastic is required, do so now. Once You make sure it all fits properly, either run some speaker wire to the OEM rear speaker wiring (tucked in with the tail light harness), run wires to your speaker amp or run all new wiring to the front of the vehicle to your radio, then screw the modified baskets down to the cargo trays, clean up your mess, and enjoy!! It should look similar to this when done:
.
The custom brackets should cover up 98% of the cargo tray's cubby, and when installed properly, will not block the cargo cover (if you have one) so it can be removed easily. For better sound quality i reccomend getting a cargo cover, it turns the trunk space into a bass box and ads alot as far as mids and lows goes.
I apologize for the crummy pix, I work all day and go to school and seem to always end up working on my cars at night. If any one wants better pix I can try to get some. Let me know if I missed something.

Ok so here's what you need:
- 10mm wrench and or ratchet with a 3" extension
- Something to cut/brake the plastic out of the bottom of the cargo tray's
- A pair of OEM speaker baskets from the front doors from pretty much any civic, i used some out of a 91 hatch
- A pair of rear cargo trays from a dx/si hatch
- A set of speakers, I reccomend a standard sized set of 6.5" two ways, additonal modification to the baskets will be required to make the oversized speakers fit
- Sixteen coars threaded screws (I reccomend using phillips head screws)
- A phillips or standard screw driver (depending on which screws you use)
- A Drill
- Some speaker wire
- A saw of some sort (hacksaw, wood saw, cut off wheel, w/e works)

yeah you can use 6x9's, but then you gotta attach them some how, and they draw more attention from unwanted company. lol
or you can just make your own cargo cover and cut out holes for 6x9's.
the contour for the rear shelves is not hard, and making latch pins are not hard either.
i made one, and i am 17... with minimal wood work ability.
it looks nice, just cover it in some cloth (bought enough for mine for $13)
DIY? someone want?

OR you can go to your honda dealer and order the rear speaker installation kit. I just picked mine up today. It includes the correct speaker brackets like in the first pictures, as well as the screws and wiring harness to plug into the factory wiring that is already in your hatch. The best part is that it was only $21 for the kit!
yea except i used to work for honda and had my parts guys search the country for them in blue at least ten times and could never get them
well crap if you can still get the kit then i'm definitely going to order two of those kits (two of my hatch's have black interior). but either way this is a good write up. and it does work, and MAN does the sound quality in the back change (in a good way) with the rear cargo cover.
Thats a good idea. I was thinking about doing something like that but building it with fiberglass instead of using the front buckets. I'll probably end up fiberglassing over them maybe depending on my hackjob. Good write up and it looks good.
