honda shifter headaches
Okay, so I have just started hooking up my 2001 Prelude. I want to change out the shift **** and boot and also get a short shifter. But, everyone has a different story on what exactly I have to order to make sure it will all fit the Prelude shifter setup. I tried to unscrew the ****, but it is clipped into the boot. I think that I have to get a short shift adapter, instead of the whole thing - is this right? And how do I know that the **** and boot that I order will fit my car - can I just order from MOMO or OBX or Pilot and expect that it will fit?
For a Prelude you will need a short shift ADAPTER, like you mentioned. It basically just moves the point where the shift cable attaches to the shift lever giving you a shorter front to rear shifter movement. I've heard a lot of mixed opinions about them. I personally have had one on my car for more than a year without any problems. It didn't make an extreme change, but it did shorten the throw about an inch.
Honda shift ***** are threaded and are universal, meaning a **** will fit a civic, integra, prelude, accord, etc. Many ***** are made that will thread on. Some others are made to slip on and secure with setscrews. I would prefer a threaded ****.
You might have to rig up something as far as getting your shift boot to match up to a ****, or you can replace your shift boot. I originally used my oem shift boot with my ITR style shift ****. I just used a wire tie inside the boot to hold it to the ****. I recently had a boot made in leather that fits "properly" and it looks better than how I had the oem one rigged, but the old way didn't look bad.
