Projects, etc. How bad is too bad of a base
I've seen a lot of people start out with some pretty rough cars and turn them into quite amazing builds. I was curious as to what you would say is too bad of a base to start with for a build? If anyone has any pics of their bases then that would be awesome. I'm pretty much looking at picking up an ej ex shell still and it's not ****, but it's far from perfect. I've always dealt with 240's so I'm not much of a civic guy but I do know a handful of stuff along with the basics.
It all depends on your skill level and area of expertise. I love to get cars with decent rust free/ severe accident damage free bodies, because IMO that is one of the hardest things to fix correctly. I could care less if the interior is shot or if the engine is blown, because those are my specialties, whereas if I purchased a car that needed a lot of body work I would be up a creek, as I have no in depth knowledge in that field. Just my 2 cents...Good luck!
Yeah. Well my little bro does a lot of body work, and we can do mechanical work and such. I wouldn't buy a car that needed body work really unless it's something easily replaceable. Clean quarters, rockers, etc. I used to be big on mileage but I'm kind of getting to the point of not caring. Suspension, bushings, engine will be changed anyway. Just trying to get some views on others who have bought less the perfect cars to build up. I'm just putting a DD together, I'm not looking to do any crazy builds or swaps.
The main factor from me experience in building project cars is the price you are paying for your base platform. A good price on a platform will be different for everyone as another poster said in another thread it all depends on how much work you can "DIY".
Basically if you feel you found a good deal on a base setup then there really is no right answer for this question.

Well I'm trading a shell for a shell. I'm not adding cash. The body is straight, it has kind of high miles (around 200k). It's been in an accident before, clean title, body is straight, but the rad support is a little bent up. Not tweaked, just kind of ugly on the bottom. Has a trans, aftermarket header, coilovers, lca's, full interior, etc. I really just need an engine and a few small parts. It's rattled primer but I was going to paint it. I think I'm probably just going to go for it and see what happens. I've dealt with quite a few projects but never got my hands that dirty with a honda. Guess it's time to learn.
A few things about what you are looking at now...the lower rad support has spotwelds that can be drilled out and it is quite easy (and cheap) to replace. As for the rattle can spray paint...that stuff is a bitch to sand down contrary to what people think. Most people think "Sweet, primer grey! I can just respray it." You could, but it will look horrible. Just kind of preparing you...Good luck with the project!

We are definitely going to sand it down and paint it correctly. We have the equipment and stuff. I know the rad support wasn't that bad. Not the easiest to replace, but by far there are worse things that could need replacing. It's really just one spot and it's straight, just looks ugly. I think for the parts on the car and the body, plus I'm trading straight up, it should be fine. I'll have to post pics of my collections of mistakes once I get this car over here. Thanks!
92 EG sedan (full running car). i picked mine up for $800 or $900 in dec. 08, but anyways im up to $2600 total on the car and i was like whoah whatd i buy? lol. Money flies when u start fixing other ppls mistakes and im just trying to get the car 100% reliable before i start my serious building.
