Default d16y8 into a 93 si

So my z6 is pretty much finished, the piston rings are fried and its knocking bad from the bottom end. So im getting a d16y8 out of a 97 ex. Im going to reuse my injectors and pick up a dx dizzy from advanced. My question is are the mounts the same between the z6 and y8? because my friend has a brand new set of hasport mounts for a z6 and he was going to give them to me for my subs. Any other input would be great like am i going to have to change anything else?

I do believe it is different but im not 100% all people do is rewire the clips to make it easier or buy the wire conversion from msd.

You can't use an Z6 dizzy, as it will not mount up correctly, although I haven't heard that a B7 dizzy would work either. I have seen people use their Y8 dizzy and rewire it to work with an OBD1 harness or use a distributor jumper harness (yes they do exist). As far as mounts you can use all of the Z6 mounts and you will also need to take the block mount on the driver side off and switch that to the Y8 as far as I know. Good luck!

Is this what your talking about? Seems cheap and would save me having to rewire it. ANd from what im reading now seems like all the mounts are the same. even looking at my gf's 96 ex the mounts look almost exactly the same.

Yes, that jumper harness is what I was talking about. As far as the mount go...the one actually bolted to the block (not the car) may be different, and I am sure that the rear T-bracket is also different (the one that mounts to the transmission and the rear mount on the K frame). I may be wrong on the driver side part, but def. not the rear t bracket part.

Thats correct, you can't, different bolt pattern.

They do. D15B7/D15B8 distributors are a perfect way to drop a D16Y7/D16Y8 engine into an older OBD1 chassis.

As far as the mounts go, reuse your D16Z6 mounts.

One final note, and I don't think you'll like this one, the timing is different between the Z6 and the Y8, meaning the P28 ECU wont be running that Y8 optimally. Just close it is i'm not sure, i've heard some people say that it ran fine, others said it was pretty far off.

Your ecu needs to be socketed and then you can get a basemap chip for your individual needs...if you feel the need you can get it tuned, but for a DD with almot no mods, I would not think it is worth it. Good luck!

From what I understand you pretty much have to do a dyno tune to do it correctly, start with stock P28 maps and work from there is what i've been told. If it was me i'd try it first and see how it ran before I dumped a bunch of money into chipping and tuning.

you have to use all the d16z6 mounts. even the driver side mount that bolts to the block has to be changed. the rear t bracket for the y8 is actually an inch shorter than the Z6's
i took my z6 and y8 dizzys to a local performance shop and i told them its OBD1 car and i need the z6 dizzy's guts into the y8 housing. they said no problem.
i am currently running one of these swaps in my 95 civic si and it works great. 1 big thing you need to do though is change your intake manifold to run the z6's injectors. also, you need the z6 alternator too because one plug is round, and the other is square.

Exactly what I was trying to tell you about the mounts...thanks for the help Pothole987. As for the dizzy, you can still do the jumper harness thing, as the OBD2 D16Y8 dizzy guts will work correctly with it. By "guts" the guys changed the insides of the Y8 dizzy to have the same external two plug setup of the OBD1 harness instead of the one plug setup that the OBD2 harness uses.

Ok, so the p-28 will not operate it to good? meaning poor performance?

Neither. It should have normal performance, and will run like the 2000 EX to the point where you probably won't notice the difference.

Ok, let me ask you this, would i be better off putting new valves into my z6 head and running it or just slap the y8 head onto it and loose MPG and reliability?

You're probably not going to have any ill effects from running the Y8 head on a P28.
