welll. my brother just ran into this problem with a mazda mpv he just bought. the bar inside the door that controlls the locking mechanism is broken. he had to take the door and panel off with it closed. it is possible, but it is a pain in the ***. the striker will hold you back some. if you got small arms, you can get in between the door, and panel and slid the bar by hand.

You can try taking the door panel off enough so that you can reach the lock mechanism.

I ran into a problem with a parts car I stripped. The mechanism can get stuck when the handle is pulled and the door lock is engaged. Once the the mechanism is stuck in the open position, of course the door won't open due to the lock, the lock can not be disengaged. The mechanism must be returned to it's normal position to allow the release of the door locks. The door panel can be removed with the door closed but a tab may be damaged because you won't be able to remove the screw towards the rear of the door panel. I hope this made sense.

The door panels will come off with out any damage to the panels. You can remove all but one screw from the panel. You just leave that one screw in, towards the back, and pull the panel out. You might damage a small plastic tab not the panel. You will have to replace the tab. At this point it's your only option. I may have some spare tabs. The front doors use the same tab. I'll check. Start at the bottom corner, towards the front. Just take your time it will come off.

ok i pulled the car in and i'll try gettin the panels off its just givin me more motive to do my coupe conversion earlier

They worked fine except the driver side had to be opened from the inside only and now they both wont open i might have put that child lock on but it doesnt explain why the outside wont work... i'll post pics after i get the panels off

cant even get the panels off i got the 2 screws out and cant even move the panel cuz it overlaps the doorjam where those plastic pins are that hold it on...

im really about to just unbolt the doors to get em off

The rear passenger door on my sedan does that sometimes, oddly enough i have no idea why and if i leave it alone it usually "fixes itself" and it will open. Perplexing..............

You won't be able to unbolt the doors, I tried. The limitting strap, or what ever it's called, won't let you pull the door off the car even after the hinges are unbolted. The door panel will come off, you will have to get a little ruff with it but don't worry it will be okay. I was able to remove my door panels will all the trim still on. Try starting on the top of the door panel. Make sure to remove your window crank. I only mentioned it because it's still on in the picture. I spent two days trying to figure this out. You can reach the child lock with just the top portion of the panel off, so start on which ever door worked from inside. Hang in there buddy, don't give up!

I pulled the panel off starting at the top. Like I said you have to pull hard. You can take it slow and not break anything. Is the window crank off? You have to pull up to get the lip of the door panel over the frame of the door. Once the top is loose, you can work your way around. I know the door panel overlaps in the front but it will still come out. I still think the best way would be to start at the bottom towards the back. you will only have to pull hard enuff to release the door clips. If you break some, and you might, I have some spares. I can take pics but I'm at work right now and won't be home until six more hours.

I would think you can still get these clips for the dealership, but I have not tried. As far as where I'm located, that would be Artesia New Mexico.

So did you ever get the panels off and your doors working?
