Default Bay Area Drives

I wasn't sure which section to post this in, but I figure "road racing/auto-x" is better than "Appearance and Cosmetic."

Just checking on any canyon drives or just some nice twisties around the Bay Area. Ive been around Redwood Road (Oakland Hills) and Niles Canyon, along with a few others. Would like to know of any place else in the surrounding area.

Thanks in advance...

If you are asking for nice places to drive at the speed limit, this is the place. If you are asking for places to 'canyon race', you are going to get some crap here. This forum is for sanctioned racing (eg SCCA, NASA, etc) on auto-x course & tracks.

It seems I didn't phrase my question correctly. I am looking for some nice roads to drive on. I typed "canyon racing, twisties" so people wouldn't think i meant just driving around town to the grocery store. So yes, I am asking for nice places to drive.

I appologize for offending/insulting you, didn't know you never went over the legal speed limit on the street.

My opinion (and I'd like to here other people's opinions to see if I am just an A-hole) is that it is OK to try to find fun places to drive that make better use of the modifications you've done to your car. There are limits of course that must be observed: legality, driver, tires, etc. Also, don't drive aggresively in traffic! Just because you might not get in an accident, doesn't mean that you won't cause a chain reaction that could cause one somewhere behind you. But if you are in the clear and choose to ignore a couple of advisory signs, but are staying within the limits of your car and your abilities and the letter of the law, I personally think that is definately worthwile. But if you are going beyond the limits and get in trouble, or cause injury or property damage you should get what you deserve!

There are lots of fun roads south of Thunderhill, between Clear Lake and I-5. Both paved and dirt.
The Sierra's is also a great place to explore. I usually manage a different route home from Tahoe each time. Again, both paved and dirt.
Just get some good map books.

yodaisgod is a lucky bastard, there are soo many great places to drive in santa rosa area

in lower bay area is filled with houses or business parks

i live in danville area (east bay by walnut creek)
i like to go up in the oakland hills off grizzly peak blvd

in lafayette/moraga area there is upper happy valley, various tight turns and big long fast corners

not sure what road it is, but the road out to sunol park changes into some long backyard road (28-40 miles) that ends up in fremont/san jose area. that is an awesome road with no one on it at night

my personal fave is mines road in livermore off 580, take LNL (livermore national laboratory) vasco road
a long long *** road 80 miles that goes east-south direction, roads are taken care of, few drivers, some motorcycles, and a weird rest stop that sells food & drinks and general supplys (used to sell dynamite)

try and go at night or on a cool day, cause it gets very hot, and there is no cell coverage if your car flys off a cliff or engine blows up

I know the area surrounding 680 is full of places to drive, a lot of hills and nice turns. I've been driving around the Oakland hills a few times, I usually take Redwood Road/Skyline BLVD. I imagine there's a few nice places in Moraga as well, just judging while driving down highway 24.

I think the road that starts in Sunol that you are refering to is highway 84. Can reach it from 680 and it takes you all the way to 880. That whole area between Sunol/Fremont is full of drives. I usually do head out at night, less people and headlights are visable. I'm not tryin to break any speed record, just lookin for a nice night drive. So I try to keep things as safe as possible

I'd like to know more about those Santa Rosa drives, I live near that area. If you ever make it up to the North Bay, Napa has a few nice drives as well.

What area of Danville do you live? I have family in Danville/Blackhawk as well. Thanks for the info, I'm glad you understood the nature of my post.

You might want to check out this drive happening Saturday, 17th August in Marin & Sonoma. I just found out about it.

hwy 9 between saratoga and santa cruz is my favorite, that whole area rocks so much compared to the crap around san diego. also around woodside/palo alto (page mill rd).

I like Highway 9 as well. The main thing that I don't like about it is the amount of traffic/stupid drivers there. I've never tried any roads in the Palo Alto area, looks like it would be an interesting area though, thanks.

I'm not a big fan of going in big groups, just takes one idiot who can't control his car to ruin the run for everyone else involved. I've driven that stretch before (Marin-Stinson Beach) at 2am in the fog, didn't think I was gonna make it out alive (took Highway 1 instead of 101 ). Thanks for the info though, I should try the drive during the day when i can actually see more than 2 feet ahead of my car .

Bolinas Road out of Fairfax, then Panoramic to Hwy 1. We then did a transit north on Hwy 1 to Stewart Point. Final stage was Stewart Point Skaggs Spring Road. They are planning more road trips. I'll try to remember to post info here.
