you have to take the crank pulley off and there is a mark on the crank gear and block. Make sure you buy the crank holding tool from amazon.com its cheaper or you will never get the bolt loose.

It would help if you told us what motor you were talking about.

Make sure you're aligning with the right mark on the head too.

For the D15B1, align the cam gear 90 and 270 deg marks with the head surface. For the D16A6, align the cam gear's single mark (at ~210 deg) with the mark on the upper side cover.

either have to have a special tool for that bolt or a strap wrench to hold pulley and a heavvy duty breaker bar. When i did the timing kit on my wifes 01 civic i broke a snap on extension and a 19mm deep impact socket.

If you live in a snow or rust area then good luck without the tool.
Maybe heat it up for a few minutes with a torch and maybe that will expand and break free a bit when it cools down.

I've been luck with jamming the flywheel.
I use a 1/2 drive flex handle- not a ratchet (tried that... broke ratchet a couple times.
With the flex handle, I connect to the shortest exenstion I can to clear the fender and then i put a long pipe on the handle. I think the pipe is about 6 feet long.
Just straight and steady force - no bouncing or jerking on the bolt!

It ran fine a week ago, when i put the cam in I took the plugs out and they were fine. I dont think they could go bad in a week of it sitting in the paking lot. Ive been doing some reading, and have learned that if the timing belt breaks or is very far off, then the valves can get bent, could this be the problem, if so how do i fix it?
