Default How much gap do I need in this project?

Right now I am making a fiberglass door piece for my speakers and cossovers and I am wanting to paint them but i am not sure exactly how thick paint really is...im trying to find out so i can make the correct gap for my crossover display.

I have the speaker piece made and my crossover display piece made but, im wondering if I have to make the "gap" from the edge of the crossover to the edge of the fiberglass piece bigger.

Here is what it looks like:

In this piece, the fiberglass is right against the crossover but if i back down the crossover to where it needs to be, there will be a gap. When I made this, i used 1 layer of masking tape to create a gap, as well as to protect the piece from the fiberglass resin

(when i was making it)

(after its sanded)

Can anyone tell me if 1 band of masking tape is the correct thickness that I need? Or do I need to make a new one with a few more layers to make the space needed for when its pained, the crossover will fit as perfect as possible?

Thanks for your time!

P.S. if you want to see the progress of the project so far to see what im doing, the link is here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/audio-security-video-27/fiberglass-door-panel-piece-progress-pictures-2381521/
