Default 5500 rpm cut off

got a ej 95 coupe with a d16y7 with a z6 head. kid i pulled swap from said it was running fine. cuts off at 5500 rpm tho. it was throwing code 17 VSS sensor, does that have anything to do with RPM? now i think its throwin 13 or 14 it stops flashing between 3 and 4 for the second digit. any ideas on why its cutting off? maybe VTEC solenoid isnt working? thanks in advance

usually if it is cutting you off at around 5 or 6000, it is your vtec. im not positive what code that is for, but it could be a bad solenoid, a loose wire, or your oil pressure is low. Make sure your oil level is good too.

it's cutting off like that b/c of the codes your computer is throwing. the computer is putting ur car in "safe mode" until the problem is corrected.
make sure the VSS sensor is plugged in on the transmission and that should correct your problem b/c you will not have VTEC as long as it is throwing that code therefor it will also throw the the VTEC codes aswell

if it were the wrong computer it would still rev to the ECU's redline, it just wouldn't have VTEC.

sohc with a 5,500 cut off? somethin's wrong with your ecu... even if you say it's a vtec problem, somethins wrong with it since vtec kicks in earlier than 5,500 in a sohc engine...

if your throwing a certain code, ecu goes into limp mode sometimes and wont go over a certain rpm.

you sure thats the only code its showing?

if its showing 13 or 14. 13 atmospheric pressure sensor and 14 is IACV idle air control valve.

trust me your car is in "safe mode" or limp mode w/e u wanna call it there is nothing wrong with your ECU. Even if it was an Auto ECU the car would still run but like stated above u would always have a CEL on and you would more than likely have an idle that bounces all over the place.

The best thing you could do if your unsure of what codes are being thrown is to take it somewhere like autozone and get them read by a code reader of borrow one from a friend or something so you know exactly what is going on

if it throwing code 14 i know that won't put your car into safe mode. if it is code 13 it's possible it could i'm not 100% sure on this as i have never experienced this code to see how the ECU would react to it

in stock obd1 sohc vtec ecu, the vtec kicks in at 5500 rpm only in obd2 sohc vtec ecu kicks around 4500 rpm

Limp or safe mode would be initiated by something much more severe than VSS or VTEC. Usually its an injector code or something like that. Also a non-working VTEC will not make your car "cut off" esp. with a D series. OP: What ecu are you running?

nothing "kicks" at all, stop kidding yourself.

anyway this is wrong.

D16Z6 engages at ~4800RPM (i know this for a fact)
D16Y8 engages at ~5000RPM (99% sure about this one, but it could be 5500RPM... it's certainly not 4500RPM though.)
