I have a 97 honda civic EX with a d16yb stock motor.
I ran a compression test today and my results were as follows
cyl1 180. cyl2 150. cyl3 165 cyl4 165.

when doing the test i cranked the engine for about three seconds for each cyl. then got out and checked the gauge. then switched to the next cyl. was this the appropiate way to do test?

Have someone look for you and tell you to stop when it stops rising. Also push the throttle open.

yeah the numbers do seem kinda low. I just did a compression test yesterday on my jdm d15b, and the numbers were at the 210 range from cylinders 1-3, and 200 at cyl. #4. Did you do it with the gas pedal floored while you were cranking the car? Try that, and see what numbers turn out.

The appropriate way to do a compression test is to take out the 15amp fuse for the ecu from your under hood fuse box. Then, take out spark plug #1 and tighten the compression tester into cyl 1 and have someone (you can do this too) go inside and crank the car while you have the pedal floored all the way down to the ground. Do this until the gauge meter stops clicking where you feel it wont reach any farther. This is where you will get your reading on what the compression is in that particular cylinder. Then put the spark plug back in, and move on to cylinder 2 and repeat the steps.

Hope this helped, if anything try a google search on how to do a compression test on a honda, thats how i learned, and is fairly easy to do with a friend helping you do one or the other (cranking or reading) and you should be set.

 

As long as the compression is within 10 psi of each other then it's fine. Every gauge is going to read different, the only thing that matters is consistency.

 

im not saying anything is wrong with it,
im just trying to say for a rebuilt motor thoses numbers are low.

 

my specs are from 125-180 is good and within 25 of eachother. new distibutor and it fired up

 

those numbers seem too far apart. how is your car running?

If the test was done correctly, compression in cyl 2 is low.

 

quick noob question should the car be cold or warm i dident know if it matters just seeing how metal expands when its warm ?

 

should be at operating temperature

 

i just found out that different compression testers read out differently?? can someone clarify this if its true or not??

 

from what i hear they do supposedly the better quality give a more accurate and consistent reading but this is also coming from a person that has never had to use one so you might want to get that double checked.
