You can use the pr3 cam gears, that is what I did and they work fine.

If you are installing cams why wouldnt you go ahead and adjust the valves. The right answer is "inspect what you expect". and you will never be let down.

I believe since the cam lobes are a different profile, you would need to readjust your valve lash to the new type R specs profiles. Anyone else on this?

If they are still in spec it will take all of 30 seconds to check them with a feeler gauge. Why wouldn't you?

Sure the lobes are different, but the base circles didn't change. On the contrary, you are absolutely crazy if you think just because you did it 5,000 miles ago that you won't need to do it again when you are changing the camshafts. There are almost always grinding imperfections or variances in mass production products.

I would take it to a competent mechanic to do the camshaft install for you. I don't believe you have the capability to do it correct yourself, not being a jerk but…

well if your a very well qualified mechanic then why did you ask that question? you should have already know you needed to do it, especially if your taking off the cam cap/rocker arm assembly you should at least check it.

Yes, he should adjust his valves. Just because the valve train is quiet and it runs well does not mean they are adjusted correctly. If they are too tight they arent going to make any noise. But if he goes on a hard run, the temperature of the exhaust valves will rise, the stems will get longer due to the temperature increase which closes up the lash, and the exhaust valves will be kept off their seat which causes hot exhaust gases to rush by the gap between the valve face and seat. This can quickly lead to a burnt valve. So it would be foolish not to do it unless you don't care about the engine.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized you did adjust the valves. But that still applies as to why you should.

Yeah, check the lash, it doesn't take very long at all.
