Icon2 99 si cluster swap....vss problems!!!!!

I have almost finished the cluster swap( 89 crx si) with the exception of the vss wiring. I have seen numerous treads on the swap , but most of the info doesn't help with the vss wiring. Here's where I stand.
1. The stock cluster has a built in convertor for the cable so it must have a signal wire going to the ecm. I should be able to piggy back to the ecm with it.
2. Ho do I know if my electronic speed sensor is working, how do I test it?
3. The 99 cluster vss pinout should be # 12(blue&white) on the larger A plug...right?
Has anyone done this before that can help me. I've heard of this being done numerous times but yet to find someone that did it themself. HELP ME OUT !!!

sleepinciv 8:32pm: ur car is a 89 right
GkSsN 8:33pm: yea
sleepinciv 8:33pm: ok so u have 3 wires of the vss one ground, one power then the wire for the vss ok
GkSsN 8:33pm: yea
sleepinciv 8:34pm: is the vss not working?
GkSsN 8:34pm: idk
GkSsN 8:34pm: how do i test it
sleepinciv 8:34pm: drive the car
GkSsN 8:35pm: i have it on stands....and had it in 2nd gear
GkSsN 8:35pm: nothing
sleepinciv 8:35pm: ok where do u have ur ground ,power and vss hooked up at?
GkSsN 8:36pm: yellow& blue...power from the cluster.........yellow &white...signal...black ground
GkSsN 8:37pm: i checked to see if the power was going to the plug
GkSsN 8:37pm: it is
GkSsN 8:37pm: along with the ground conection
sleepinciv 8:37pm: u hooke the vss up to a yellow/white wire ? where is this wire located at
GkSsN 8:38pm: the vss plug
GkSsN 8:38pm: has those colors
sleepinciv 8:38pm: but where are they running to
GkSsN 8:38pm: i hooked it up tooblue&white on the 99 cluster plug
sleepinciv 8:39pm: ok heres what ya need to do ok
sleepinciv 8:39pm: all the wires need to be ran up to behind the cluster ok
GkSsN 8:39pm: they are
sleepinciv 8:39pm: ok ground there should be a bolt right there on a from ok
GkSsN 8:40pm: yup
GkSsN 8:40pm: just what i did
sleepinciv 8:40pm: ok power needs to hook to any power source fromnm the clutter
GkSsN 8:40pm: done
GkSsN 8:40pm: acc source
sleepinciv 8:41pm: the vss will not attach to the plug it will attach to a wire that is said not used its a yellow / red that came of the small factory plug
GkSsN 8:41pm: yup
GkSsN 8:42pm: number 5
sleepinciv 8:42pm: thats how u have it?
GkSsN 8:42pm: small plug
GkSsN 8:42pm: on crx side
sleepinciv 8:42pm: number 2
GkSsN 8:42pm: on what plug?
sleepinciv 8:42pm: u on a cell phone?
GkSsN 8:42pm: no
GkSsN 8:43pm: stupid computer
sleepinciv 8:43pm: dam u cant get pics lol ok on ur crx plugs u cut off ok
sleepinciv 8:43pm: there is a big one and a small one right
GkSsN 8:43pm: yea
sleepinciv 8:44pm: ok from the small plug there is only one yellow/red wire that is the wire u need to hook up the signal to
GkSsN 8:44pm: number 5
GkSsN 8:44pm: next to a blank
GkSsN 8:44pm: 3 over from the end
GkSsN 8:44pm: total of 8 pins
sleepinciv 8:44pm: looking at the back of the plug or the front
sleepinciv 8:45pm: if ur looking at the back of the plug were the wires run into the plug
GkSsN 8:46pm: goes ...Black,red/blue,gre/black, grn/red,yel/red blank,yellow, grn/yellow
GkSsN 8:46pm: 8 pins total
GkSsN 8:47pm: theres only one blank on the small plug...vss i thought was next to it on the inside
sleepinciv 8:47pm: ya right to the left towards the end it should be yellow/ red
sleepinciv 8:47pm: hey brb ok
GkSsN 8:48pm: k
sleepinciv 8:48pm: o and have u made sure the vss is all the way in the trans?
GkSsN 8:48pm: it bolted up..
GkSsN 8:48pm: has to be...right
GkSsN 8:50pm: i wasn't too worried about the ecu wire...i figured as long as the cluster got the signal it would work
GkSsN 8:50pm: the i would hook up the ecu
GkSsN 8:50pm: then
sleepinciv 8:54pm: are u hooking the vss wire to the cluster??
GkSsN 8:55pm: yea...blue and white should be the cluster pinout...
GkSsN 8:56pm: 99 civic 16 pin plug...number 11
sleepinciv 8:56pm: no it needs to go to the crx wrie the was on the small plug yellow/red
GkSsN 8:57pm: that goes to the ecm...right
sleepinciv 8:57pm: yep that ye;/red runs righ to they ecu
GkSsN 8:57pm: then what goes to the cluster?
GkSsN 8:58pm: 11(blu/white) says it's the 99 cluster vss signal
GkSsN 8:58pm: what goes there
sleepinciv 8:58pm: ya but ur not in a 99 car ur in a 89
GkSsN 8:59pm: ok.....the cluster is using 99 plugs because the crx plugs won't work
GkSsN 8:59pm: how does the cluster know my speed?
sleepinciv 8:59pm: right go hook up the vss wire to the yel/red wire and tell me what happens
GkSsN 9:00pm: what happens to the blu and white on the 99 cluster?
GkSsN 9:00pm: i leave it?
sleepinciv 9:00pm: yep
GkSsN 9:00pm: sooo how does the cluster know my speed?
sleepinciv 9:00pm: threw the ecu
GkSsN 9:01pm: what signal from the ecu goes to the cluster
sleepinciv 9:01pm: no clue lol but one u hook up the vss and yel/red u speedo should work
GkSsN 9:02pm: have you done the swap?
sleepinciv 9:02pm: yep it in my hatch
GkSsN 9:03pm: wierd...lol
sleepinciv 9:03pm: go try and let me know lol
GkSsN 9:05pm: i did have that hooked up...but i also had the other wire hooked up....i'll try and take it off
GkSsN 9:05pm: do you have your wiring diagram still?
sleepinciv 9:05pm: u had all 3 hooked up?
GkSsN 9:05pm: yea
GkSsN 9:05pm: one from the vss.....then one to the ecu and the cluster
sleepinciv 9:06pm: i have the pics of plugs number and stuff, and idk if that would cause it not to work all 3 hooked up.
GkSsN 9:06pm: can you send me the pics?
sleepinciv 9:06pm: emal or ht pm
GkSsN 9:07pm: email is gkssn@aol
GkSsN 9:07pm: i have pics from online....
GkSsN 9:07pm: are these your own pics?
sleepinciv 9:07pm: nope omline ones
GkSsN 9:08pm: ohhh...i might have those..lol
GkSsN 9:08pm: i'll look
sleepinciv 9:09pm: sent
sleepinciv 9:12pm: u get it
GkSsN 9:13pm: yea
GkSsN 9:13pm: so the pinouts look the same
GkSsN 9:14pm: so on the chart it shows #11 as the speedometer.....nothing goes there????
GkSsN 9:14pm: for the 99 cluter pinout
sleepinciv 9:18pm: no
GkSsN 9:19pm: do you understand my problem? if the tach output needs a signal to run the tach.....why doesn't the speedometer need a signal to run?
sleepinciv 9:19pm: not sure how it all work but it should

that was a fuster-cluck trying to decypher what was said in that aim convo.

the 99 cluster does not receive the speed pulse signal from the ecu. the stock vss signal is converted at the old cluster from a manual into an electronic output. this is then routed back to the ecu. for the new cluster you need to tie the signal wire from the vss into B11, the blue/white wire, so that the cluster can display speed. then tie that same wire into the yellow/white wire so that your ecu gets the speed input, and doesn't throw a vss code. the fuel gauge wire is also yellow/white so make sure you get the correct wire.

so whats the pinout on the yellow and white that goes to the ecu? Do you know how to test the vss signal to make sure that it's working?
