Default ACL Race Bearings.. Fine or Not Needed?

Hey, this is my first bottom end build.. its going to be a turbo motor.. and im trying to figure out what bearings to go with.. i was kind of leaning towards ACL Race Bearings.. This car is not a track only car.. its more less a weekend warrior, drive it when its nice out, and take to the track, i have another car for a daily driver.. i plan to have this bottom end in there as long as possible, not just the season, so i want reliability along with having a quick car.. and if for some reason i have to make this my daily driver, i want it to be able to hold up

so with that said.. should i go with the race series bearings? whats the difference between those an regular ACL bearings.. if there are better bearings out there besides ACL in the same price range what should i look into.. it seems alot of people run ACL's and ive heard nothing but good things about them.. so if anybody could clear this up for me i would appreciate it.. an i am having a machine shop assemble the motor since i have never done this before an dont want to do something wrong an waste all this money.. thanks

OEM or the standard ACL are ones I would choose. There is no need or advantage to use the race bearing for your application.

Stay as far away as you can from universal one size fits all ACL bearings.

Check your clearance and get the proper sized oem ones.

I have had great results using acl bearings in Hondas. My clearances have been within Hondas specified clearances. That's with using bore guages and mic's,not plastiguage.

The ACL race bearings aren't needed. They are really sensitive to dirt/debris during break in and are really only needed for higher RPM / higher load engines. The stock bearings, sized correctly of course, are more than strong enough for your engine. Are you using Aftermarket rods?

oh, ACL race bearings use silicon and tin in an aluminum matrix, which is different than the normal lead/tin/copper particles sintered together. Don't get me wrong, the ACL bearings are awesome, they're just not needed for most applications. Most of the time we use them on stoker engines or engines with different bottom end geometry that loads the bearings differently (i.e. longer rods to change rod/stroke ratio). We've built 500 hp K24 motors using stock Honda bearings.

well im having a local machine shop build the engine an do all machine work.. i wanted to have all the parts to give them to assemble it.. would it be a good idea to buy standard acl's or oem bearing.. or should i take them everything except bearings an get them to measure eveything and have them order the correct bearings?

I run clevite as well as ACL, great bearings there as well.

It really depends on what clearances you are shooting for. I've run ACLs with no problems but I used them because they gave me the desired clearances.

see thats the thing.. i dont know what kind of clearance's i want to run.. i just want a good set of bearings.. for a reliable fast street/track turbo motor..

edit:that is why im having a local machine shop do the work.. if i knew this kind of stuff i would do it myself lol

edit again lol: yes i will be using brand new eagle rods an cp pistons.. (answering previous question)

yes, have them measure everything and order the correct bearings. You may have to use ACLs or Clevites if the clearances are out of the Honda bearing range, especially with eagle rods and if there was any machining of the main/rod bearing jounals
