Hello im in need of some advice i have a 98 civic dx and my second gear has gone out and third is on its way. I think im going to pull the trans and get a re build but i wanted a second opinion from someone who knows more : )

 

take out old one and buy a good used one

 

Buy another 1 if you come on a good deal,if not then rebuild the old.

 

It'll cost around the same to rebuild it, just buy new one.

 

what do you mean by going out, usually when people think there gears are going out it is actually just their syncros. What are some symptoms explain to me what happens when you try to shift gears. If you have an extra car you can drive my advice to you is open your transmission up before you do anything than you will be able to see what is wrong, and if it is just your syncros rebuild it cause that would be really cheap. If you have bad gears than yeah a used tranny may save you time and money

 

your right third is for sure the syncros but im not sure about second if i try real hard and use my skillz (jk) i can make the gear 80% of the time but i hear stuff moving around sometimes when i start out in frist and sometimes in second. If i do buy used do you know of any good places i can check out? ty all very much for your help so far i am greatfull : )

 

If you lack the skills to repair the transmission yourself, it will probably be cheaper to buy a used transmission from your local junkyard or Japanese importer. If you can repair it yourself, there is no reason not to! It will be a good experience and cheaper.

 

yeah i would just rebuild my trans

 

Not to mention that the rebuilt one will be like a BRAND NEW transmission as opposed to a used one.
