Default Good Ol' Clutch Swap

I started on this task a little bit Saturday. Removed my exhuast/header/etc for the clutch change and upcoming turbo manifold.

Sunday I started going through the steps to get the tranny out.

I found a well written how-to on s2kca.com.

Fast forward to last night, I followed it step by step, and now I'm @ the point where the motor is leaning down and the tranny is just hanging on by a few bolts.

But, DAMN if those 17mm's are hard to get off there. No room for an impact, and I am having a helluva time even getting the ones off that I can get to. Looks like on the drivers side their is one that I don't think I can get even w/the motor leaning down.

Any thoughts suggestions/rants/raves?

Thanks in advance!!

I just found the link for those that are interested.

Ok then.

I'm stopping after work to get a proper extension...I had to piece together about 50 to get to the 2.5' mark..lol.

I can pickup some swivels as well. I have some, but not for my big wrench, they are all 3/8.

HAHA Yeah I got a pack of 1/2" extensions from harbor freight awhile back. They ranged from 1/2" to 18". I use them all the time now... No problems with them at all and I have put some tq on em. Good Swivel's are VERY expensive. Cough up the loot for the 17 and probably a 14 while you are are it. Will proly cost you 30+ for those two but I promise they will end up being worth every penny!

Planned on stopping @ HF tonight.

I'm confused, I thought you were talking about universal (swivels) you are talking about swivel sockets? I've never heard of them.

I'd go with Matco...best bang for buck. Pinless also, unlike Mac and some cheaper ones.

a long Matco 1/2 to 3/8" impact extension, I think they're 2 1/2' long will do wonders! Use your impact gun, the extension, and a universal socket, and you don't lost much torque, even though the bolt is far away.

AWesome..I am feeling better already.

I was sorta blah about this...everything went smooth and then boom...the bolts holding the tranny which I have never had problems before on other cars stopped me dead in my tracks..

I'll get the stuff tnoight and get that sucker loose.

Thanks for the heads up fella's.

From the looks of the manual, I see 2 14mm on the bottom.

2 17mm on the pass side.
1 17mm on the drvr side.
2 17mm on top.

The top ones will be a serious chore.

Just a quick update, I GOT IT.

Picked these up from Harbor Freight for $26 bucks, and they are 1/2" impact.

Good buy imo. You guys were right, there is NO WAY I could have gotten that w/o those swivels.

Thanks.

You should lower the subframe to give you enough room to get to the bolts and to clear the transmision from the tranny tunel, the bolts that hold the subframe are really long.there are 3 on each side 2 19mm towars the front,2 19mm in the middle and 2 17mm towars the back, take the middle ones completly off the the front ones and the rear ones back them out about 2" that should help a lot.

talk the rear subframe bolt out completely to see how long it is then screw it back in about 1/2". make sure you have support under the engine when you take the bolt out.
impact will not break the bolts loose with regular universal joints and long extensions. so i used a breaker bar for the 17mm tranny bolts, then use the impact to get the bolts the whole way out.

here's some pics from my clutch job. http://gotspeed.110mb.com/2001_s2000_clutch.php
