... and two days from now, he'll be working on .... (Wait for it) a Honda.

Ok, so the engine tryed to imitate a Coffee Colatta; it happens. But cheer up, there is hope! The series engine for your Accord is (probably) the most common engine available used / recycled for Honda's; the F22B2.

You've got your money back.
You've probably got a refreshed (like new) head.
You've got a decission to make.

What kind of shape is the rest of the car?
Is it your wife's toy? (or does she wish for a 480SL)
Can you afford to get a new (to you) car? (Sales tax, Financing, Registration fees, Property taxes (again)) you get the idea.

Crunch the numbers and make some calls. Dropping a used unit in it isn't out of the question and could be much cheaper than you think.

I think you should look into replacing the Honda engine. The Jeep GC has a very nice ride and the seats are very comfy, but be wary of Chrysler design and manufacture as it leaves a lot to desire. I had one and it is quite possibly the only vehicle I have ever owned that has given me fits.

If you like your Honda, then repair it as at least you know how the car has been used (even though the engine is not the original) and you don’t have to go to the trouble of tagging(oh the joy of spending the day at the DMV) and a car payment

Good luck

.... I really doubt you cracked a sleeve, they are iron and you don't crack a sleeve driving slowly out of the parking lot, it just doesn't happen....... I have a feeling your mechanic had no idea what he was doing, and the HG was improperly installed(hince him feeling bad and giving your money back). This of course is IMO but...

You need to find a person that LOVES to work on hondas, not a guy that gives up on them that easy.

But it's over now, so i say get yourself a cherry picker, pull that bitch and drop the new one in. Find a friend that knows hondas and a helms manual, buy a 24 pack of beer and get to work.

Not to be mean or anything, but if you have to ask how hard it is, you probably shouldn't attempt to do it yourself. There are several steps in removing the engine and replacing it with a new/used engine. In my personal opinion, it would be a 7-8 on your 1-10 scale. That's if you don't run into any unforeseen problems.

If you've never done one, 9. 6 or 7 if you've ever pulled/dropped any motor in your life. 4-5 if you've pulled/dropped one from this platform before

if you can take one out you can put the same thing back in. label everything. there's only one way to learn.

It's one of those "the more you do it, the easier it gets" kinda things.
The first time is a real pain in the "posterior", and at some point you feel like giving yourself a ; but it's not insermountable.

If you're willing to attempt it, there are several things which are 'Must Have's" (Besides the obvious).

Helm's Honda Shop Manual
Digital Camera
Roll of Masking tape
Felt tip pen.

I would suggest the following before you start yanking anything:
Read up on the proceedure.
Become familiar with where things are and how to get to them.
Give it a good bath. Clean up the engine as best you can because you may be transfering some components off the old engine for the new one.
Grab some bright lights and your camera and take some pictures to remind yourself how things go back together.
Take your roll of masking tape and tag all the harness connectors and vacuum hoses with notations where they came from. (IE: TPS, Temp sensor1, temp sensor2 etc, etc.)

Is all of this retentive? Yes, but a good proceedure to follow for the first time. It would spare you the inevitable posting of the thread "my car won't start".

Now you're ready to start.

It could be a great Father/Son project.
Look at it this way; either way it goes, he'll have a better understanding of what he wants / doesn't want to do with his life.

Mr. Adams gave you a good way to look at the situation, he has a good attitude. In good faith, I assume you are telling the correct version of the facts. If so, then something is obviously wrong or there is misssing information. What you just described sounds very unsual. Out of curiosity, I called a few local mechanics and machine shops, since they had no ax to grind with you, and were free to give an opinion, they all said that mechanic knew what was going to happen before he started that car up because:

You drove the car in still operating, or at least did not indicate that the vehicle was dead when you took it in, or that it was a dead engine and towed in for repair

Sleeves are not good one day and then bad the next day. That's just BS.

Whether it was a head gasket, warped head, cracked head or sleeve, no competent shop would let milkshake oil in a car, unless they knew it and hoped the repair would last and then let you worry about any other problems later if it blew -- but perhaps the reason for letting the milkshake in it.

Milkshake oil does not happen from [YOUR] one start up, AND certainly not in a few minutes. It takes [time] to get all that coolant and oil mixed up together. So, if that is true, then the milkshake was already there when you took it in, and they never removed, or if it happened on their watch, then they did something wrong.

Ask yourself this question, what was the condition before I took it to the shop? Something just doesn't seem right about this
scenario. I bet that you could start to think of many questions and facts that are going to show that something just does not fit together correctly.

That guy was hoping to cut his losses very quickly. Legally, he might be scot free, unless you can prove that he caused the problem, or contributed to it, or had the last clear chance to prevent the damage and/or further damage.

Too much to speculate on to say anything more. What do you mean by it died? Died is a big word and can have lots of meanings ... did it freeze up? exactly what did it do? Who did the initial diagnosis, the same repair shop? Why would someone who can install an engine himself not do the head gasket job? Just out of curiosity I would love to hear the shops version of the facts.

well.the car was not operational when i had it towed in. HIS ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS WAS;CYLINDER MISFIRE ON CYL2 AND 3.FAULTY IACV.BAD THERMOSTAT.BAD TB....I DID CHEK THE CEL CODE MYSELF AT HOME AND HE WAS RIGHT BOUT THAT.COOLANT LOSS AND MILKY RESIDUE ON THE OIL CAP LED HIM/US TO BELEIVE THAT THE HEADGASKET WAS BAD.>>>SO HE DID THE NECESSARY REPAIRS.HE SAID HE CHECKED THE HEAD WITH A STRAIGHTHEDGE AND SAID THERE WAS NO WARPAGE....IM GUESSING HE FOLLOWED PROPER PROCEDURE.DRAIN OIL AND COOLANT. SO IF IT WAS MILKING UP THEN HE WOULD HAVE SEEN IT THERE. HE GAVE ME THE CAR AFTER DOING ALL THIS...TWO DAYS LATER THE CAR STARTED WITH A MINOR MISFIRE.AND THEN DID IT AGAIN THE FOLLOWING DAY.THE 4TH DAY THE CAR DIDNT START.JUMPED IT AND THEN IT STARTED. AFTER THAT DAY DIDNT START UP.TOOK IT BACK TO HIM HE REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS CUZ THEY WERE SOAKED AFTER ALL THE STARTING ATTEMPTS.THEN IT DID START.....HE THEN SAID LETS GO 4 A TEST DRIVE BEFORE YOU GO,HE WENT INSIDE AND I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE RPMS DROPPED THERE TO LIKE 200 RPM SPUTTERED AND DIED OUT....THATS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HE CHECKED THE OIL AND SAW THE MACHACHINO COOLATA,,,HE GAVE ME MY MONEY BACK .......THATS BASICALLY IT.

Just do the swap man. Save you some money and some headaches. depending on where you have it done or if you do it yourself it should be anywhere from FREE to 1,500 for the labor. Get a few estimates.

BTW: ALL CAPS IS INTERWEB SCREEMING and the RED doesnt make it any better.

Are you mad at us? LOL

I usually blame it on the keyboard.
But enough about that.
Forget about what transpired before. It might make for an interesting finger pointing exercise, but I don't think that productive.

Start lining up your prices. Call several Auto recyclers in your local area.
Find yourself a repair shop that specializes on Honda's and get some estimates. Ask for the pricing differentials if you supply the unit, or if they do.

let's get this thing back on the road!
