crazy. Apparently the scanner is $3k and the printer is $15k.

Sweet.
I know it is a little different, but the other day my mom was messing with her rapid prototyping machine at work and made a working clock (just required a spring) that was almost completely sealed. I thought the fact that some part could be made with a bunch of intricate gears already in place and then sealed was pretty bad ***.

i worked for motoczysz awhile back.they build a prototype moto gp bike.they have a small rp machine there too.they also send some parts out to be done by one of those machines in the vid.the reason for sending them out was that it would make the part in a very strong plastic that you could install on the bike and test it.like valve covers and side covers.small mounts.thats what i thought was cool about it.
Yeah we have a Dimension 1200 SST, perfect for our market. I use it a lot for small part fittment. Yes I do work with other shops... ideas/work is kept confidential between both parties.
We've got that same one, I rarely have to make revisions to prototype stuff anymore because of it. The design is right the first time I program it. Its saved me tons of hours, and ive yet to lay a finger on it.
I bet you wonder how you got along without it? that thing is cool as hell....now fess up. I know you got a plastic mold of some ***** floating around that shop somwhere

I first saw one of these things back in the Fall 2000 semester in architecture school. We visited Viking Range Corporation in Greenwood MS, and they had one of those 3D printers that they used to prototype parts like ***** for stoves and other appliances, etc. They showed us a working adjustable wrench made in that machine.
Now they have these things that can do color models of buildings and things like that. Saw some of those at the 2008 AIA convention in Boston last year.
