Not a Honda, but here's an engine swap I've been working on. It's a slow moving project, but I'll try to keep you guys updated as I make more progress

Car: '93 Audi 90 C/S Quattro
Engine: '92 Mitsubishi 6g72 (3.0L DOHC V6 TT)
Transmission: Audi 01A (AWD), pneumatic locking rear diff.
Engine Management: Megasquirt II
Turbos: Twin Misubishi 14b's (Internal Wastegates)
Exhaust (SS): Custom manifolds > 2.5" Downpipes > 3" Back
Estimated Power: ~400awhp

That is pretty intense! I definitely wouldn't have the guts to make my own adapter plate!

 

Interesting swap, pretty sick that you made your own adapter plate. My question is, for 400awhp, why didnt you go with a VR swap? A bit easier and parts for VR's are way easier to find than Mitsu V6 parts.

I didn't go with a VR swap mostly because I wanted to make my own parts instead of buying them and had a 6g72 laying around so figured why the hell not. Plus, all the engine really needs for that kind of power is a good set of forged pistons which are easy enough to find. I might also decide I want more power in the future (with a better transmission) in which case I think the 6g72 is probably the better approach.

 

looks to be a fun project! alot of work for 400whp. deff unique though!

 

I think it's worth it for a Quattro setup. Nothing like putting that power down smoothly, and reliably!

 

That's pretty amazing... That's one hella thick sheet of aluminum. Nice work, keep it up, looks like you're dedicated and precise.

Lol, I started thinking the same thing about a month into the project. It's pretty easy to go power crazy though and I wanted to set my goals at a point where I think there is a good balance between reliability and power.

I make the rough cuts with a jig saw and reciprocating saw and then clean up the edges with the Bridgeport at work. All of the important holes (ie dowel pin holes and countersunk holes) were all drilled at once on the mill so I'm pretty confident about their accuracy. I used paint to transfer the non-critical holes which I'll just drill on a drill press.

 

Neat project, Audi purists will hate you for this.

 

Good job on the fab work, but I have to Ask Why?

Was the S4 2.7 motor not strong enough to make the power? Was the Mitsu motor that much lighter or did it have that much more power potential? Why not just boost the motor that was in the car? You are already doing the stand alone injection setup, so why not just tweak what was in the car?

 

It's pretty hard to get an S4/A6 2.7tt motor for cheap/free.

 

At first I was debating between a 2.7 or an older 20v 5-cylinder, but like Paul_VR6 said, neither of those two options would be cheap. 6g72's are a dime a dozen and so are the parts for them. The only benefit to using the 2.7 or 5-cylinder would be that the engine and trans bolt together....there would still be a lot of other custom work to go along with it and I'd rather put the extra effort into making an adapter plate than sinking a lot of $ into one of those engines. Plus I like the 6g72 for it's compact size (being a 60 degree V6). The 2.7 and 2.8's are 90 degree V6's and take up the entire engine bay, making it more difficult for stuff like turbos, plumbing, etc..

 

What about the 1.8 or 2.0T? For 400Hp that number is pretty easy to do with the four cylinder. Of course it doesn't sound near as good as the V6. What are the differences in the TT motor and the regular NA motor, other than the rods and pistons?

 

Shame you didn't go the VR6 route I'd rather have you make another set of adapters for me then paying 034 for anything. Probably another reason to go with the Mitsu motor

 

I guess I'm still convinced that the 3.0 is going to be the most reliable choice in the long run and is worth the little bit of extra work, and like you said will hopefully sound a little better and produce some nice low end torque

The only differences I'm aware of are the pistons (lower compression) and possibly slight differences in the head castings. '93+ TT engines also have a forged crank and 4 bolt main bearing caps, but apparently those don't matter a whole lot until you start getting into the high power (800hp+) range. The connecting rods are actually the same for N/A and turbo engines.

 

The VR6 is really a bad choice for anything except swapping into a Golf/Rabbit in place of a 4 cylinder. It is too tall, too heavy, and too inefficient. The only thing the VR6 is good for is pulling around a Passat or Cayanne.

They aren't even any good for that, vr6 engines are junk. Those cylinder heads make me cringe. It was a neat idea that narrow angle v6, but it just isn't any good for a performance application.
