Default Oil change mess

When you guys take off the oil filter does oil come leaking down everywhere on you? When I changed the oil on my car I get the filter off with no mess. However when I did my neighbors civic oil started leaking down all over once I got the filter loose. Is this normal?

the oil filter placement is *less than ideal*

it's not suprising

Yeah, mine always drips on me, I've learned to deal with it. Just keep a towel next to me, and keep the oil pan under it. I like how it drips all over everything, the axle...

I do it from the top.. you can reach your arm down by the intake manifold if you stand around the fender and feel for it and unscrew it (i can do it by hand)... I have one of those wide/large oil drain pans.. about the size of a 17" rim.... and I position the pan under.. then unscrew the filter from the top and left it drop down.. I don't have any problems w/ a large mess or getting the oil all over my arm...

I think the drain pan is made by Blitz (not the performance part company) it was like $10 at Kragen... its just a large/low oil pan thats hella wide.. I can usually drop the filter down into it w/o a mess in my garage floor..

Yeah. I like changing the oil on the Honda V6 engines a lot more than their I4's.

The filter faces upwards and is located closer to the passenger-side fenderwell area. I don't remember the exact location, but you can do an oil change in half the time of doing an Integra.

this is just annother reason, in the long list of why I don't waste my time doing my own oil changes.

let the dealer do it for $25.

$100 a year is worth it so that I don't have to deal with it.

and no, I am not saying take your car to jiffy lube.

haha I know what you mean.. the oil filters on V6 camrys.. reach from the top and you might get burned from the exhaust manifold.. reach from the bottom and you might get burned by the oil...

Oh god, V6 Camry... a friend of mine has one and the rear head gasket went bad. So yeah, I decide to tell him that we can do it together. Shame that the rear exhaust manifold is virtually impossible to unbolt w/o the engine out of the car. So we had to leave it on and stretch the manifold to get the head gasket in.

But it's easy to change the oil--- That's the engineer's attemt to be on the mechanic's good side, eventhough they will always hate each other.

I've gotten the oil change time on my teg down to about 15min. Ha, anyone wanna race (see who can change oil faster)?

$100/year? Damn, it seems like I'm changing my oil every other month. Is it just me, or do other people realize you don't save a whole lot of money doing oil changes by yourself? I mean, honda oem filter is $5, oil is about $2/qt., which comes out to about $15 or so for each oil change. Shops charge like $20, and I guess the dealer wants $25(?) I don't know, I guess I don't mind doing it myself, but still..... BTW, WTF is up with JiffyLube and their $40+ oil changes? 2X the price to vacuum your floors?!

hahah yeah when I was in college I'd rack up so many miles it'd NEED to be changed monthly (3K miles) for me its not about the money saved.. its knowing that it was done right by someone who cares about the car (me) instead of someone who just gets paid to do it and its "just another customers car"... I can do an oil change in about 15 minutes so its no biggie.. I have all the tools, jacks, etc....

also its knowing that I put in quality filtration parts in my car (Mobil 1, Purolator Pure One, Bosch or STP sometimes I'll buy OEM)and synthetic motor oil for my motor and plus while its up on stands.. I can check out other things.. I like working on my car so its no biggie for me...

haha yeah Jiffy lube is crazy.. they charged my aunt like $40.. I asked her what they do.. its basically an oil change, wash your windows, vacuum your floors and top off whatever fluids need to be topped off.. then of course they'll try to sell you a $15 fram air filter or something for like $50.... I've never and never will take my car there.. I've heard too many stories about over torqued/stripped oil pans...

I don't see how that's possible on a GS-R. I surely can't get it off w/o some oil dripping, before I even get the filter unscrewed all the way.

maybe he left the car sitting overnight.. I seem to recall that if the car hasn't been used/started in several hours and left at my house that very little/no oil drips out when you remove the filter.. I could be wrong though I don't remember... I usually start the car anyway to let it warm up a bit so the oil drains better....

What do you guys mean by mess? Nothing ever drips onto the floor if you're careful. Juat position the oil pan underneath whenever you're working. However, the oil does drip down my arm some when I take out the filter. I think that's inevitable, unless you do it from the top like GSRaCerbOI said. It's not a big deal, it's not like you're wearing your best clothes and changing your oil....at least I hope not.....

Could it be my car is burning oil so there isn't that much in the car when I change it? The other day I got the filter off with no oil leaking down my car. Perhaps I should get my car checked out?

very true. i used to drive a legend and it was easy to take the oil filter off and drain the oil in 5 minutes. with my teg... it sucks that i have to go under the car more than i usually would with my legend.. then try to reach in and take off the filter.

The V6 Hondas (Accords) are a piece of cake to do, the filter is locoated right by right wheel with plenty of plenty of space to work with and it's facing downward. Very easy to do.

The V6 Camry's I know can burn you. I should know, my mom owns one. Easiest thing to do is get one of those oil filter cap that goes over the oil filter and put a small 3" extension and a rachet. Makes removing the filter easy and simple and you don't burn your hand. Plus you get one for $6 from you local Toyota dealer.

Well yeah if that's true, the oil is cold and won't flow worth crap... I always change my oil right after driving, hot oil runs out better, drains more of it out of there.
