Firstly, I have been searching all day and haven't found the answer to this question. I bought a set of power folding mirrors from a JDM EG and I am trying to install them in my EJ1.
My problem isn't with the relay or the wiring (although I'm sure I'll have problems with that too), the issue is this:
I took apart both mirrors, thinking I could install the JDM motor into the USDM housing, so that way I won't have to paint the JDM ones. I have been reading about how people are swapping the glass from the USDM mirrors onto the JDM motor (since the mirrors are the same shape) so that they can have the convex mirror on the right, and the flat mirror on the left, as it should be for LHD cars.
So how in the world do you replace the glass? The backs of the two mirrors look totally different. I can't get the hard plastic black border around the glass off because I'm afraid of breaking the mirror. It's not a rubber seal like I thought.

Any ideas guys? Can I just swap the whole motor and glass assembly into my USDM housing and be ok? It doesn't seem like that will work because then the JDM convex mirror will still be on the left.
I can take any other pictures you guys need.

I have these guys disassembled all over my kitchen table, so any help would be great.
No one has done this before?

I already demounted the UDSM mirror from the motor. The JDM is pretty much stuck on.
The real problem is getting the black plastic trim housing off the actual mirror glass. Any ideas, or is that stuff glued on there?
I'd like to use these mirrors, but not JDM stock because the visibility SUCKS. It's even worse than the Spoon replicas I just took off, which I didn't think was possible.

why not take the USDM mirror/glass and just glue it directly on top of the JDM mirror..... youll still have to paint it but atleast your visibility will be what you wanted it to be...

i have installed 2 sets of power folding mirrors. One on my eg and one on my girls dc. I tried swapping the glass out too. but I ended up cracking one trying to take the glass out the plastic. I know that you can take out the mirror from the motor but for the glass out the casing is hard. I think its possible to just take the whole mirror off and put it on the jdm motor but part of it wont line up
You're lucky, I'm right in the middle of doing a write-up for this.
First the good news. Here's what I did:
First the good news. Here's what I did:
- Get a large, wide pot - one that the mirrors will fit inside - and boil some water. Start with the JDM ones b/c this will give you practice as it's not as big a deal if these ones break.
- Remove the water from the direct heat.
- Use some tongs or heat-resistant gloves to grip the mirror w/motor in the hot water. Long BBQ tongs work.
- Suspend JUST THE MIRROR PART in the water for 2 to 5 mins. This will make the plastic housing nice and soft.
- Start at the pointed end. Pop the plastic housing away off the mirror. Be careful enough, but I found the mirrors just peeled away once they were nice and wet and soft.
- What you will see: The JDM ones are held on in 3 spots less than 1in square by some thick blobs of glue (or tape? I dunno, it was something weird.) There is also a wide strip of masking tape on the back of the mirror which I think serves only to provide some grip for the glue/tape blob.
- Only use a wide flat-edged screw drive if absolutely necessary. Be sure to cover it in a shop towel or rag.
- I did break a mirror, but it is definitely because I was trying to go too fast. Go SLOWLY.
- I used "Automotive Goop" to reattached the CDM/USDM mirrors to the JDM housing.
- For God's sake, mount the mirror housing back on to the CDM/USDM mirror mount -- the thing that holds the mirror to the door -- not the JDM one. The angles of the mounts are different for RHD vs. LHD cars, and you still won't be able to see properly out of your mirrors.
- Squirt some oil around the pivot point for the folding mirrors. If they do not fold smoothly, it will sound like they are on an endless loop and you'll think they are broken.
- I don't know if your JDM PFMs will fit perfectly inside CDM/USDM PMs. I installed mine into a manual mirror housing and it was a perfect fit, so there's hope.
- Don't scratch the back of your mirror. You will regret it. Don't use anything more abrasive than your fingernail or a piece of wood if you're trying to get any crud off the back.
- Did you notice that your JDM mirrors are pre-wired for heat? That's what those two dangly wires hanging freely are for. I was fortunate enough to pick up a Power Folding Heated Mirror switch, and added heated mirror elements to the backs of the mirrors. Very slick. But ... if you're in sunny California, possibly not very useful.
