Default clutch pedal rubber bushing

one afternoon, i tried to start my car and it wouldnt crank, i looked at the floor mat and i see little pieces of rubber all over. it was tha rubber bushing for the clutch thats needed in order to start the car. anyways i replaced it with a new one. i had to remove the whole clutch pedal to put the new one in.
my question is there is a spring involved in the pedal assemby. i cant seem to get it in place. it this spring necessary? everything still works. the clutch pedal isnt doing anything unusual without the spring installed. did anybody encounter this problem before?

i already fixed the problem. i put everything back except for the spring. clutch engages smooth and pedal retracts by itself. i was just wondering if its ok without the spring installed.
