How long do wires last?
Hi,
Doing a tuneup. Replacing plugs, cap, rotor. Is it automatic to replace the wires? They were replaced about 60,000 miles ago. No drivability problems with the car.
95 Accord. 4 Door Automatic.
Searched but could not find any info on recommended change interval for wires.
Thanks!

If you go buy Honda's maintenance shedual there is no actual service duration. According to Honda you change them when they fall below spec'd resistance. Also physically check the wires for any signs of cracks or corrosion. If they are dry and cracked or the wire ends are corroded they should be replaced.
If you have a multimeter you could check the resistance yourself. @ room temp when measuring the resistance should be less than 25kΩ. (25,000Ω)

The guy above is right, but if you are doing a general maintenance overhaul for the car like oil, trans fluid, plugs, water pump, and all that good stuff, you might as well just replace them, it won't hurt to go ahead and do that.

But there's another little test that you can perform which will keep you running during those cold damp days.
Periodically, grab your wifes (or Mom's) spritz bottle from the laundry; and with the engine fully warmed up (and running, of course) start spraying the spark plug wires - starting furthest from the distributor and moving towards it.
If any of them are pourous and their insulation has started breaking down, the engine will start skipping as the electrical energy finds an easier path to ground.
On an additional note; don't grab an ignition wire if you suspect this condition to be present and your life insurance isn't paid up.

P
OP if your going to swap them out just for the hell of it can you ship your old ones my way? OEM sumitomo wires are about $60-$75 from the dealership up here. I wouldn't mind a used set for spares if your thinking of tossing them without testing them.
x2 on the spray bottle trick, I totally forgot about that one P.....
Hey Guys
Thanks for the info. Will test using Pauls "Spritz bottle test" before replacing. Last thing I want to do is throw away money.
GhostAccord are the prices you quoted CAD or USD? I'm in Toronto btw.

The price I listed is CAD. Where you live in TO it may be a bit steeper from one of the dealerships around there. Give your local Honda Parts dept a call and find out what they are charging. You may find a set of Sumitomo's online from the US for a lower cost. Majestic or Honda parts deals.com.
I ended up replacing the wires today. The shop called and said there was oil in the spark plug tubes. The end caps of the wires were "gummy" and beginning to break-down from exposure to oil.
I read up on the procedure in the FAQ:

kinda late for you but...
Honda has this warranty that's 14 year or 150,000 miles i believe for all 95-97 models. you fall right in the 14 year category but not sure if you passed 150,000 miles yet. they change your spark plugs, wires, rotor, cap, oil change and filter all for free.

Oh man. I'm annoyed I missed this one.
I'm surprised i never heard of this TSB even though I have two cars registered with Honda. I'm looking at it now and it says 95-97. I have a 94. Its kinda odd they left out the 94. I'm below 150,000 miles btw.
